Since our weather dropped from mid-30’s to the low 20’s in one hour and then bottoming out at 10° for many hours and would be under 24° for over 48 hours we knew we would have a high likelihood of loosing all the tips and branches on our fig trees. We have experienced this the last two cold winters, despite the trees growing almost 8’ tall and still getting a decent crop. We took advantage of this hard freeze and did some pruning and then propagated out some fig cuttings to develop out over the next 1-3 years.

Prepping for the cold front coming in. Potted plants are all moved to the greenhouse and more firewood has been brought in to make sure it stays above freezing!

Happy New Year! So yesterday’s low was 64, tonight is 19. So we have been getting our greenhouse ready and tonight will be the first regulated fire of the season to keep everything warm & alive inside.
If you are considering adding a greenhouse to your property we’re building a great case study for a multi-purpose use of having one. We have found our greenhouse to have huge practical use for us on growing food but also as another ‘outdoor living space’ for our family and friends. Ours is a raised 20’x40’ hoopehouse. You can see a rough inventory below of all the growing we have going on inside for plants currently. In addition we also have used this space many times for hosting gatherings and parties and other events. It has a double barrel wood stove to keep it human comfy if needed or above freezing temps to push through the cold nights. We can seat 12-16 people and much more for a standing party. As a result we can say they are far worth the investment.
And if your local we’d love to get you built one on your property! Reach out to Blue Sky Agriscaping to design & build your own outdoor living space regardless of size. They are pretty awesome.

Growing/making your own food doesn’t mean all your meals are variations of salad. Take this example below; homemade instant pot yogurt, garden butternut squash, free range chicken eggs from our compost makers, and homemade kombucha in a Grolsch beer bottle (because they are indestructible)! You too can make and grow more of your own food!
