Preparing for Increased AO Oversight & Unannounced Surveys
CMS has finalized its rule strengthening oversight of Accrediting Organizations (AOs), effective June 16, 2027. The rule emphasizes unannounced surveys, tighter alignment with Medicare Conditions of Participation, and stricter separation between accreditation and consulting activities. This will raise expectations for consistency and accountability across survey processes.

Why it matters:
Agencies must maintain true, continuous survey readiness with less flexibility for advance preparation and limited support from accrediting bodies. To help organizations adapt, we offer independent mock surveys and access to certified ACHC and CHAP consultants. We provide objective readiness assessments and guidance to strengthen compliance in this more rigorous survey environment. (Source: CMS Final Rule on AO Oversight)

New Episode !
This week Marcylle speaks with Laura Parker, co-founder of The Exodus Road, where she shares her eye-opening journey battling human trafficking across the globe. With over 50 million individuals trapped, the fight feels daunting. But what if we’re making a bigger impact than we realize?
Laura has dedicated her life to combating human trafficking, particularly the s*x trafficking of minors, which she witnessed firsthand while living in Thailand. Her work has led to operations in over 20 countries, partnering with law enforcement to rescue victims and provide aftercare services. Laura is passionate about educating families on the realities of digital exploitation, a growing concern in the United States.

There’s a lot that goes into building a strong team but at the end of the day, what it’s built on matters more than anything else. If the foundation isn’t right, it won’t last.

Over the years, I’ve worked with leaders across the country, and I continue to see the same challenge come up. Teams aren’t struggling because they don’t know what to do. They’re struggling because of how people are being seen, how they’re being led, and how they’re being responded to. That’s where this starts.

You must find something to love in every person you lead. Not because it comes naturally, but because it changes how you show up. And it does, especially in our industry. In home health and hospice, the work is already heavy. People are tired, emotions run high, and expectations are constant. It doesn’t take much for frustration to build, for assumptions to form, or for someone to quietly get labeled as “difficult” or “checked out.” And once that happens, leadership shifts, even if we don’t say it out loud. We lead them based on who we’ve decided they are instead of who they could become, and that’s where teams begin to stall.

Strong leadership requires something different. It requires you to pause long enough to look at your own perspective before trying to change someone else’s behavior.

Because many times, it’s not that someone doesn’t have more to give, it’s that they haven’t been led in a way that draws it out of them.

I’ve seen this play out time and time again in agencies just like yours. When a leader makes this shift, you can feel it. The tension softens. Trust starts to rebuild. People begin to engage again, not because policies changed, but because leadership did. And in an industry like ours, where the work matters this much, that kind of foundation isn’t optional. It’s what holds everything together.

Something to think about this week:
Is there someone on your team you’ve already made up your mind about?
Have you unintentionally limited what they could become because of it?
This is the work I care deeply about, helping leaders strengthen what’s underneath the surface so their teams can actually sustain the work they’ve been called to do.

New CMS Insights Highlight Trends Shaping Home Health & Hospice
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released updated 2024 datasets in May highlighting provider utilization, spending patterns, geographic variation, and Medicare enrollment trends across the country. These updates include provider-level service and payment data, as well as state and county-level insights into how care is being delivered and where costs are highest.

For home health and hospice organizations, this expanded visibility reinforces a continued shift toward data-driven oversight. Geographic variation and utilization patterns have historically informed future payment and policy decisions, meaning agencies operating in higher-cost or higher-utilization regions may face increased scrutiny over time. At the same time, enrollment growth data helps organizations better understand market demand and plan for strategic expansion or referral development.

Medicare Enrollment Dashboard:

CMS is continuing to build out the data infrastructure that shapes reimbursement, oversight, and value-based care. This makes it more important than ever for providers to understand how their utilization, outcomes, and market compare against regional and national trends.

Not sure what this means for your agency? MAC Legacy can help you analyze your risk and prepare for what’s next.
