You've been here before - you're receiving applications, but many of them show months or maybe even years of gaps in employment. Should you be concerned?

Considering the last few years of workforce instability -- the answer is no. Why? Many may have relocated and then been laid off. Or maybe the person had worked in an industry, was burned out, and is searching for a change in their career -- an increasing trend we are seeing.

Perhaps family and/or caregiver responsibilities prevented the candidate from being employed. This trend was particularly prevalent during the last couple of years.

Job seekers with gaps in their work experience may also have encountered and will be able to share unique experiences or skills they gained while they were out of the workforce. These skills may be an asset to the job they are seeking with you.

The bottom line: if the job applicant is honest and transparent about their job history -- you may want to consider how these admirable qualities will positively contribute to your team.

Like workplace romances, friendships between co-workers can also create tricky situations unless handled appropriately.

This is especially true when you suddenly find yourself supervising one of your buddies.

How can you handle this situation in a positive way? It is possible to make sure you preserve your friendship and create a positive and productive work environment for everyone involved.

We recommend that you just own it! Your existing rapport with your friend can actually benefit the team. You understand each other on a personal level already, and you can each can pick up on social cues that may have been missed with someone you don’t know as well.

You can also trust this person because they already have your support as a friend. This support and really, their honesty when it comes to work-related issues, may help you make better decisions for your team and your company.

Be mindful, though, of the rest of your team. Avoid any behavior that may be seen as favoring your friend. If concerns arise, act quickly and take the opportunity to talk openly with your staff. Establish expectations and provide assurances that everyone will be treated fairly.

We know managing workplace dynamics can be challenging. Let us invest in your success. Start today: https://lsistaffing.com/contact.

It’s been happening all over the nation. And now it’s happened to you.

You’ve been laid off. Now what?

A general rule: try not to panic. We know you have bills to pay and other commitments that can’t be ignored. So let us give you four ways you can rebound from a layoff.

1. Start saving. Yes, you’ve heard it all before. But it’s true! Even $10 or $20 socked away somewhere will come in handy when you must buy a necessity. You can also only pay the minimum on any debts you have just to keep a little more in your pocket.

2. Keep a routine and challenge yourself. You may be out of a job, but that doesn’t mean you should sit on the couch all day. Get up in the morning, go for a walk, invite a friend over to chat, or brainstorm about new job opportunities. Giving yourself structure will help keep you motivated to gain new employment.

3. Take care of your mental health. Yes, it is stressful and upsetting to lose a job, so let yourself work through these emotions. If you start to feel overwhelmed and your emotions are preventing you from job searching, consider reaching out to mental health services. There are many that are free in every city.

4. Get a temporary or seasonal job. So many companies are looking for reliable and hard-working folks like you. Plus, you can keep earning some income until you secure another permanent job. Who knows, your temp employer may be so pleased with your work that they will hire you for good!

It's the end of March -- how are you doing with your New Year's resolutions? If you are stuck or unmotivated, here are three ways to kickstart your resolutions.

1. Did you set too many goals in too many areas of your life? If so -- you may be feeling overwhelmed. It's OK to scale back. Choose two goals - one tied to your work and one tied to your personal life. Then determine the next steps for each to achieve success.

2. Have you looked at your current habits, and do they prevent you from success? For example, are you trying to be better at finishing your to-do list, but you haven't set any deadlines? Do you want to add morning workouts, but you can't get up early? Examine your options and change your habits. For that to-do list, start using a planner or app that helps you set and meet deadlines. To get more exercise, use your break time to go for a quick walk instead of struggling to get up at 4 a.m.

3. Do you have a support system to help keep you motivated? Think about people in your life who encourage you and stand by you through good times and bad. Ask them to keep you accountable -- check in each week, share your progress, and, most of all, ask for help if you are struggling.

Are your employees using their paid time off? According to new studies, the answer to that question is probably, "No." In fact, unpaid PTO has doubled since 2019!

If you are an employer, you may need to re-think your perceptions about PTO. If your employees know they are able to take time off without guilt, you are more likely to have happier and more productive team members.

So what should employers do? Try a very simple tactic: encourage leadership to take time off. This creates a positive workplace culture for staff to emulate and feel more comfortable when they request their own time away from work.

With International Women's Day this week, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate our rockstar Business Development Manager - Kansas City Metro/President Club Member Megan Neer. We are grateful for her leadership within LSI, especially as she keeps extremely busy helping companies find staffing solutions. Here, she shares her insight on how you can improve your time management skills.

"I have been with LSI for almost four years, started as a recruiter, and transitioned into sales shortly after. I am honored to have made and grown professional relationships throughout this career thus far.

"I am excited to work for a company that allows me to change many lives of business owners and employees with our service and impact on staff. I am thrilled to get to contribute to a forward-thinking and fast-moving company.

"My territory at LSI has grown rapidly, and that has made time management an essential function in my everyday routine. Time management is something I've had to make a priority to be successful, especially in sales. By doing this, I've set aside designated times to focus on the big picture and put my efforts into my work.

"Prioritizing my tasks, it's allowed me to achieve my goals faster. Of course, teamwork makes the dream work, and none of it would be achievable without my great coworkers helping me to make those time blocks possible."
