Magic With a Message

So cool meeting Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS, CEO of Enough and host of the No Magic Pill podcast. Blake doesn’t need any magic pills as the work he does and the amount of lives he has positively impacted are beyond magical.

It was an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be able to use magic to help the students in the special ed class at Fieldstone Middle School talk about their mental health. There’s nothing more magical than connecting with kids who normally struggle to connect with others. As always, I included Wes Iseli Magician & Illusionist’s Flip trick to make a point about how we can’t control what happens to us (as life is a coin-flip), but we can control how we react to what happens to us. The girl who won was ecstatic and beaming with joy. Afterwards, the teacher told me how these kids aren’t used to winning and it meant more to her than I could imagine. A special day, with a special groups of kids.

It was a magical Monday in Ithaca this week. During the day, I presented on mental health to 8th graders, where I sprinkled in some magic. The highlight was a student dropping several F-bombs, during a trick reveal. In the evening I gave my Magic of Community presentation at the NAMI Finger Lakes Annual meeting. Happy Magic Monday, this is a very special Magic Monday. First, it’s Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you. More importantly, it’s the first Monday of Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s always been my goal to use my magic to help people prioritize their own mental health as well as be more sensitive to those who are experiencing mental health challenges. Each Monday in May, I will be posting one of my videos that emphasizes the importance of mental health. To start, I’m so excited to share this video I recorded with mental health advocate extraordinaire, Carnie Wilson.

It was such an honor to be the featured performer at last night’s New York State Network for Youth Success 30th Anniversary Dinner. The members of the Network are the real magicians as the positive impact of Community Schools and afterschool programs on children and families is nothing short of magical. I’m glad I could help celebrate them with my Magic of Community set. A very big thank you to New York State Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden for joining me onstage for one of my favorite tricks. I hope the set really demonstrated the magic we can achieve by working together with a positive purpose. Professional pictures to come.

Big day here at Magic With a Message. This morning I’m in Washington DC, doing mental health advocacy and of course some magic with the amazing Carnie Wilson. Heading to the airport now, as tonight I’ll be performing the Magic of Community at the Empower Youth Success Conference’s 30th anniversary dinner.

Wrapping up an amazing three days doing magic and talking about mental health with students in the Syracuse schools afterschool program. I’m so grateful to be able to use my mental health journey and my magic to make a real impact with these fantastic kids. Today, there was one kid who was really into the magic and he half figured out a trick. Afterwards, I showed him how to do the whole trick and gave him the deck of cards and told him to practice. He was so excited, I think it made both of our days.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day. As luck (of the Irish) would have if, green is also the color of mental health awareness. Today, I’m lucky to be in Syracuse using magic to discuss mental health with 7th & 8th graders in the afterschool program. I’m grateful to be able to work with these incredible kids, who shared some deep stuff and were really into the magic.
