* Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Mahavir, the founder of Jainism.

* Lord Mahavir was born in Bihar on the 13th day of the bright half of the moon in the month of Chaitra in the year 599 BCE (Chaitra Sud 13) to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the Ikshvaku dynasty.

* Lord Mahavir was the 24th and last Jain Tirthankara who established the core tenets of Jainism.

* He took over his father's kingdom at an early age and ruled it for over 30 years. Later, he gave up all worldly possessions and decided to seek enlightenment in life.

* All his life, he preached ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity) and aparigraha (non-attachment) to his disciples and his teachings were called Jain Agamas.
