📻 Why Is 146.520 MHz So Important to 2-Meter Operators?
If you’ve spent time on 2 meters, you’ve probably heard:
“Try 146.520.”
Why that frequency?
146.520 MHz is the national 2-meter FM simplex calling frequency in the U.S. It gives operators a common place to listen, make an initial call, and see who may be nearby.

It’s often the first place to check.
But good operating practice matters:
Call there. Make contact. Then move.
Once a QSO is established, moving to another simplex frequency helps keep 146.520 available for other operators trying to make contact.
That’s what makes 146.520 MHz more than just another memory channel.
It’s an operating convention.

How far can a ham radio reach? There is no single fixed answer because range depends on the frequency band, antenna, height, transmit power, terrain, and propagation conditions.
Two handheld radios at ground level may typically communicate only a few kilometers because buildings, hills, and trees block VHF and UHF signals. Moving to a higher location can greatly improve line-of-sight and increase the range. A mobile or base station with a better antenna and higher power can often cover tens of kilometers. A repeater placed on a tall tower or hill can extend communication much farther by receiving a weak signal and retransmitting it over a larger area. HF radio works differently. Its signals can interact with the ionosphere and return to Earth hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away.
Amateur radio satellites can also connect stations across very large distances.
This is why ham radio can be used for everything from local handheld communication to worldwide contacts.

Update on evacuation area for the Norfolk Southern train derailment at Whetstone Street in Bucyrus, Ohio.
The evacuation radius has been reduced from 1 mile to a ¼ mile area. Residents are being advised to remain clear of the area as a precaution. There is no immediate threat for the community at this time. Updates will be provided via the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. alert system as well as the Crawford County Ohio Emergency Management Agency and Bucyrus Police Department page.

DIY Charcoal Water Pre-Filter Bucket — Clean Water, Anywhere!
When you’re off-grid or prepping for emergencies, clean water is everything. Here’s a simple, low-cost way to pre-filter dirty water before boiling — using just buckets, sand, gravel, and charcoal!
🪣 What You’ll Need:
- 2 buckets (one for filtering, one for collecting)
- Spigot + seal
- Cloth screen or coffee filter
- Activated charcoal
- Sand and gravel
- Drill, knife, and marker
🔧 Step-by-Step:
1. Drill a hole near the bottom of the bucket for your spigot.
2. Install the spigot and seal it tight.
3. Add a cloth screen to catch large debris.
4. Layer in activated charcoal to remove odor and bad taste.
5. Add sand for fine sediment.
6. Top with gravel for larger particles.
7. Pour in dirty water and let gravity do the work.
