Most standard homeowners policies generally cover damage from wind, hail, fire, and lightning. Flood damage is typically not covered by a standard homeowners policy and requires a separate flood insurance policy. There is generally a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins, although exceptions may apply. Ohioans should also review their wind and hail deductible and understand whether personal belongings are covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.
Take time to review other coverage that may help after a disaster, including additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable and debris removal. Creating a home inventory with photos or video can also make it easier to document belongings and file a claim. Preparing now can help Ohioans understand their insurance coverage, identify potential gaps, and be better positioned to recover when severe weather strikes.
