This year’s Market Lamb Show at the Delaware County Junior Fair ended in familiar fashion as Ella Altizer took home the top honors with a lamb weighing 141 pounds, adding to the family’s run of dominance dating back to 2019.

The win marks Altizer’s second grand champion in the event, joining her 2022 triumph, and the seventh in the past eight shows in which an Altizer showed the top lamb. Altizer’s sister, Aubrey, won the event five times from 2019-2024.

“He was definitely a barn favorite this year,” Altizer told The Gazette. “He was a fun project this year, right from the get-go. His personality definitely stood out compared to the other ones I’ve had. The bond we all created with him is pretty cool.”

Altizer, now a sophomore at Big Walnut High School, said a lamb’s personality “definitely helps,” especially when factoring in the showmanship aspect that can swing a judge’s decision.

Loua Dipa received a confident drive from Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. in the second heat to win the $265,000 Jugette for three-year old filly pacers on Wednesday at the Delaware County Fair.

When the field of eight was sent on its way in the $240,000 final, Loua Dipa outsprinted Darlin’s Angel (Lauren Tritton) and led past the opening quarter in :27.

The supplemental entry, Vanna By The River (Aaron Merriman) was the first to apply pressure on Loua Dipa while parked on the outside past the half-mile station in :55.3.

The field bunched up as they reached the three-quarters in 1:24.3.

The pocket sitting Darlin’s Angel was looking for room in the inside and the other Ron Burke trainees, I’m A Lou Lou (Tim Tetrick) and Sandyboots Yankee (Yanick Gingras) came from the outside.

At the wire it was Loua Dipa by a length and a quarter over Darlin’s Angel, who out photoed I’m A Lou Lou in 1:53.

Delaware City Schools climbed to a 4.5-star rating this year on its Ohio School Report Card, and Superintendent Keith Pomeroy said he believes the results show the work being done in Delaware classrooms is making a difference for students.

Delaware City Schools received 4 stars in Achievement; 5 stars in Progress; 4 stars in Gap Closing; 5 stars in graduation; 3 stars in Early Literacy and 3 stars in College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness.

Pomeroy said the district is proud to see its rating move from 4 to 4.5 stars.

“It reflects the great work happening in our classrooms every day,” he said. “Our teachers and staff are helping students grow, and the data shows it. We’re seeing more students scoring at the highest levels on state tests and fewer students scoring at the lowest levels. That movement is reflected in our Performance Index, which continues to increase year over year. It’s a positive indicator of the progress our students are making, and we’ll keep building on it.”

After eight years of competition, Kenleigh Disbennett took the top spot — Grand Champion Meat Chickens — in the Meat Chickens Pen of 3 competition at the Delaware County Fair.

Disbennett, 15, who is a sophomore at Buckeye Valley High School, said she has been raising chickens for eight years and has also raised turkeys, taking a reserve champion ribbon in 2024. Disbennett, a member of the Rabbits & Roosters 4-H Club, said she was nervous going into the competition because she didn’t give her chickens any supplements to increase their muscle.

“I was a little bit (nervous) because I focused more on protein and proper care instead of supplements,” Disbennett said. “They didn’t get any supplements this year. This is my last year, so I was a little bit nervous.”

A pair of siblings took grand champion and reserve champion during the Market Boer Goat competition Monday evening at the Delaware County Fair.

Ella Trenton, 9, and her brother Kyle, 10, have been raising goats since they were both 5 years old and at the competition Monday evening, Ella’s goat, Frank, took the title of Grand Champion Market Boer Goat, while Kyle’s goat, Beans, won reserve champion.
