San Felipe Springs – The Heart of Del Rio

Long before Del Rio became the city we know today, life gathered around the crystal-clear waters of San Felipe Springs. These artesian springs remain one of Texas’ largest spring systems, producing millions of gallons of fresh water every day and serving as the primary water source for both Del Rio and Laughlin Air Force Base.

The springs give life to San Felipe Creek, creating a beautiful oasis in the Texas borderlands. Whether you’re enjoying the trails along the creek, spending time at the natural spring park, or visiting San Felipe Springs Golf Course, you’re experiencing a resource that has sustained this region for centuries.

Just a short drive away, the waters of Amistad National Recreation Area offer boating, fishing, camping, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Southwest Texas.

San Felipe Springs isn’t just a natural wonder—it’s the reason Del Rio exists. Every drop tells a story of our past and continues to support our future.

Del Rio, take a moment to appreciate the water that built our community. 💙🌊

📻 PAUL KALLINGER – THE VOICE THAT ECHOED FROM XERF

There are voices in radio history… and then there are voices that defined an era.

Paul Kallinger was one of those rare broadcasters whose sound helped shape the Golden Age of Radio—when personality, storytelling, and imagination mattered just as much as the music itself.

His career became closely tied to XERF in Ciudad Acuña, the legendary “border blaster” station across from Del Rio, Texas. At its peak, XERF was said to broadcast with enormous power, reaching listeners across the United States and far beyond. It wasn’t just a station—it was a signal that seemed to fill the sky.

Within that powerful reach, Kallinger’s distinctive voice stood out. His delivery became part of a broadcast era where radio felt personal, alive, and larger than life. Long before television reshaped entertainment, voices like his carried the country’s music, stories, and culture straight into American homes.

XERF itself became a historic crossroads for some of the biggest names in American music. Through its border-blaster influence and nationwide reach, it helped amplify and expose early careers and performances tied to legends such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Ernest Tubb, Eddie Arnold, and others who would go on to define country and early rock & roll.

It was also the world of larger-than-life radio personalities like Wolfman Jack, whose style helped define rock radio for a generation, alongside figures like Dr. John Brinkley in the broader border radio era.

In that mix of powerful signal and unforgettable voices, Paul Kallinger’s presence at XERF placed him in the middle of a unique moment in broadcasting history—where radio wasn’t just heard, it was felt across distances that seemed impossible at the time.

Even as the station evolved and the Golden Age of radio faded, the legacy remains. XERF and Paul Kallinger together represent a time when a single voice could travel farther than anyone thought possible—and become part of American music history in the process.

📡 A voice, a station, and a border-blaster era that helped shape legends.

One of the many artist of 1938 was Louis Armstrong.
I’d like to guess at what music they listened to in the class of 1938.
However that I do not have to do.
My grandfather spoke of Louis Armstrong being one of his favorites. No guessing needed there.

San Felipe’s 1938 conquistador year book sponsors.

Very interesting to see the old businesses that once were a part of downtown.
