Samuel Lawrence Foundation
The Samuel Lawrence Foundation strives to promote human interaction and encourage broader community access to science, education, and the arts.
We focus on environmental issues, like the abandoned nuclear waste at the shutdown San Onofre power plant. The Samuel Lawrence Foundation strives to promote broader community access to science, education, and the arts. Whether advocating for the safer storage of nuclear waste, teaching about sustainable practices, or sponsoring climate events, the Samuel Lawrence Foundation is committed to building a more informed and engaged community.

It only takes one king tide. 👑🌊
And no one knows what happens when 72 of them fail like that, at once.
This isn't speculation. It's the scenario experts are warning us about right now at San Onofre.
We're bringing the people who understand this risk best to one room.

Happy World Ocean Day. 🌊
The 2026 theme is "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know"
Today the world celebrates the ocean that connects us all one shared body of water that produces the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, and sustains life on this planet.
At SLF, ocean protection isn't an annual observance. It's the reason we exist. 3.6 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel is stored 100 feet from the Pacific and we're not stopping until it's moved.

DAY 03 — OSLO FREEDOM FORUM Final Dispatch from Oslo
Nadia Khawja wrapped her final day at the Oslo Freedom Forum and she's coming home with a lot more than notes.
Day 3 opened with a live music performance. Because at OFF, the arts aren't an afterthought. They're centered. They're the point.
Then the panels:
The Middle East. Venezuela. FIFA and democracy. Gen Z rising up in Serbia and Georgia, taking to the streets, making videos, refusing to be silent.
One moment from the Venezuela panel stayed with her: Maria Corina Machado won 92% of the vote. She is returning to Venezuela this summer. The people have spoken. Now the world has to listen.
And from the Georgetown professor on the Serbia/Georgia panel a message that lands close to home:
👉Keep amplifying. 👉Keep sharing. 👉Keep posting. Use every platform available to reach the voices that need to be heard.
We heard that.
❤️At SLF, we believe the same thing. The 9 million people living within 50 miles of 3.6 million pounds of unprotected nuclear waste on the Southern California coast deserve the same amplification. The same urgency. The same refusal to look away.
One more thing Nadia is bringing back from Oslo: new communities to honor through SLF's Hero Letters, our monthly recognition of everyday people doing extraordinary work. Stay tuned.
Thank you, Oslo. Thank you, Nadia.

DAY 02: OSLO FREEDOM FORUM
Nadia Khawja in Oslo reporting for SLF!
The Freedom Tech sessions showed how AI is being used to locate political prisoners, document human rights abuses, and communicate when regimes cut the internet. Tools built for the voiceless. 🤖
We're paying attention. The same technology helping free political prisoners can help hold the U.S. government accountable for nuclear waste it promised to remove in 1987. ☢️
Ask Nadia question in comments!
With gratitude,

She flew to Oslo to share with all of us!
Nadia Khawja, SLF's Director of Programs, took the stage at the Oslo Freedom Forum this week with a message that cuts across every border:
Peace cannot be built on the erasure of people.
Not in war zones. Not in genocide. And not on the Southern California coast where 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste sits 100 feet from the beach, 50 miles from 9 million people, with no emergency plan.
This is her first post reporting on Oslo Freedom Forum.

The Orange County Register just put San Onofre in the same sentence as Boeing's 737 MAX, the 2008 financial crisis, and the Garden Grove chemical emergency.
The through line: weak oversight. Industry self-regulating. Communities left to absorb the consequences.
At San Onofre, the consequence is 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste sitting in canisters less than an inch thick, 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean, with no permanent plan.
On August 20, we're bringing together the people working to change that.
