“Not 16. Not 14. Not even 12. Transition starts the moment independence begins.”

One of the biggest misconceptions in transition planning is the idea that transition begins at a specific age.

In reality, transition begins the first time a student starts building independence.

Every opportunity to:
• make decisions
• solve problems
• practice responsibility
• navigate real-life situations

…is transition.

Waiting until high school, or even later, to focus on independence can leave students unprepared for the realities of adult life after school.

Transition is not a meeting.
It is not paperwork.
It is not a checklist.

It is the ongoing process of helping students function more independently over time.

The earlier we begin, the stronger the foundation becomes.

Social skills impact almost every part of adult life. They affect friendships, teamwork, employment, self-advocacy, and the ability to handle everyday situations with confidence. While academics are important, students also need opportunities to practice communication, listening, flexibility, emotional awareness, and problem-solving with others. These skills are not built through instruction alone. They grow through real interactions, experiences, and consistent practice over time. Learning how to communicate effectively and work through challenges with other people helps students become more confident, connected, and independent in school, work, and the community. Today's quote reminds us that social skills are not extra skills, they are essential life skills that help students participate successfully in the world around them.

Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the most powerful tools students have ever had access to, but the real conversation is not simply about whether students should use it. The conversation is about how it is being used and what skills are still being developed underneath the support. AI has the potential to increase access, reduce barriers, support communication, assist with executive functioning, and help students participate more independently in learning. But if students begin relying on AI to think, solve problems, and make decisions for them, their independence can quietly decrease rather than grow. The goal should never be dependence on technology. The goal should be using technology in ways that strengthen confidence, problem-solving, self-awareness, and real-world functioning. Today's quote reminds us that tools alone do not create success. Independence is built when students remain actively engaged in the thinking, learning, and decision-making process while using those tools responsibly.

Travel training teaches much more than how to get from one place to another. It teaches students how to problem-solve, adapt, stay aware of their surroundings, and build confidence in real-world situations. Every bus ride, train stop, schedule check, and decision made along the way helps students become more independent and prepared for life after school. The ability to travel safely and confidently opens doors to work, college, recreation, and greater participation in the community. It also helps students build trust in themselves and their ability to handle situations independently. Travel training is not simply transportation instruction, it is real-life learning in action. Today's quote reminds us that when students learn how to navigate their community, they are also learning how to navigate greater independence in life.

Every student will face moments where learning feels difficult, progress feels slow, or challenges seem overwhelming. Those moments are often where the most important growth happens. Perseverance is not about never struggling or never making mistakes. It is about continuing to try, adapt, and move forward even when something feels hard. Difficult tasks help students build patience, confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience that will carry into life beyond school. When students learn how to work through frustration instead of giving up, they begin to understand that growth often happens outside of comfort. Success is rarely built through easy moments alone. It is built through persistence during the difficult ones. Today's quote reminds us that determination is not measured by how quickly someone succeeds, but by their willingness to keep going when challenges arise.

At SELF, we believe the purpose of support is not to create dependence, but to build independence over time. It can be easy to step in, fix problems, and do tasks for students, especially when we want to help them succeed quickly. But real growth happens when students are guided through challenges instead of protected from them. Coaching students through real situations helps them build confidence, decision-making skills, problem-solving abilities, and the independence needed for life after school. That is why SELF focuses on practicing skills in real environments where students can actively participate, make mistakes, learn, and grow. The goal is not perfection in the moment. The goal is helping students develop the ability to function more independently in the future. Today's quote reminds us that meaningful support is not about taking over, it is about helping students build the skills to eventually succeed on their own.

There is a growing conversation around AI in education, especially when it comes to students receiving accommodations and support services. Too often, the discussion focuses only on whether students should use AI instead of how it is being used.

Like any accommodation, the purpose of AI should not be to remove learning. The purpose should be to increase access.

For some students, AI can help:
• organize thoughts
• improve communication
• reduce barriers with reading or writing
• support executive functioning
• increase participation and confidence

The goal is not dependence on technology.
The goal is greater independence through support.

Students already use accommodations every day to access learning in different ways. AI has the potential to become another tool that helps students engage more independently when used intentionally and responsibly.

Today's quote reminds us that accommodations are not about lowering expectations. They are about creating access while continuing to build the skills students need for life beyond school.

Travel training is often misunderstood as simply teaching students how to use transportation, but it is so much more than that. It is about helping students build the confidence and skills needed to navigate the world more independently. When students learn how to read schedules, follow directions, problem-solve, ask for help, and travel safely, they are building real-life skills that extend far beyond the bus or train. Travel training creates access to work opportunities, college experiences, community involvement, recreation, and greater independence in everyday life. It also teaches flexibility, responsibility, and decision-making in real environments where students can apply what they learn. The ability to travel independently can change the level of freedom and opportunity a student has after leaving school. Today's quote reminds us that travel training is not just about transportation; it is about building the confidence and independence needed to participate more fully in life.

“Independence is not achieved by doing more for students, but by doing more with them in real environments where they can practice the skills they need for life.”

Independence is not something that can be taught only inside a classroom. It is built through real experiences, real decisions, and real responsibility. While instruction and support are important, they are only the starting point. Students need opportunities to apply what they learn in environments that actually resemble life. That is where skills begin to stick. When we move from doing things for students to doing things with them, we create space for growth, confidence, and independence. This means practicing skills in the community, at work, and in everyday situations, not just through worksheets or structured lessons. Today's quote reminds us that independence is built through experience, and that the best learning happens when students are actively engaged in the world around them.

To all the teachers, we appreciate you more than just this week!!

At SELF, we believe teaching is more than delivering academic content. It is building independence.

Every day, teachers are doing the real work that often goes unseen.
They are coaching decision-making, modeling problem-solving, and creating opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom.

For students with diverse learning needs, this work is even more powerful.
It is not just about academic success. It is about preparing for life.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize the educators who are closing the Independence Gap every single day.
Who are shifting from helpers to coaches.
Who are building the skills that students will carry long after graduation.

From myself and SELF, thank you for building independence for life after school.
