The Hot Head And Cold Feet Connection

By Dr. Yu Kang, LAc, RD
April 27, 2026

Do you feel like your body is split in two? You might be experiencing a common pattern called Upper Heat, Lower Cold. This happens when your body’s energy is no longer flowing in a continuous loop, causing heat to get stuck at the top while the bottom stays frozen.

The Two Sides of the Problem

1. The Overheated Top (Heart and Head)

When your energy rises and gets trapped, it creates "fire" in the upper body. You might experience:
• Anxiety, restlessness, and trouble sleeping.
• A stiff neck and shoulders.
• A red tip on your tongue.
• Hot flushes

2. The Frozen Bottom (The Womb and Feet)

Because the heat is stuck at the top, the lower body loses its warmth. This leads to stagnation:
• Cold hands and feet.
• Baggy eyes/swollen ankles
• Trouble to focus/ADHD
• Mucus/allergies
• Sluggish thyroid
• Trouble losing weight.
• Cramping, dark or clotted menstrual flow, fibroids, cysts, endometriosis

The "Healthy" Mistakes

Many people try to fix their anxiety or heat by drinking iced beverages, eating raw salads, or staying in cold air conditioning. While this feels good for a moment, it actually freezes your digestion and forces the heat even higher into your head. This makes the anxiety worse and the cold at your bottom deeper.

How to Reconnect the Circuit

Drain the Top: Use downward-moving foods like Daikon radish and bitter greens like kale, arugula, and dandelion. These clear the upper heat and help your liver clear extra estrogen.

Warm the Bottom: Eat warming proteins like grass-fed beef or lamb and warm spices like ginger, cinnamon, tumeric, nutmeg. These provide the energy needed to melt the cold and stagnation in the lower body.

By clearing the heat at the top and warming the cold at the bottom, you settle your mind, support your hormones, and restore your body’s natural vitality.

Why Protein Is Essential on GLP-1 Medications

Maintaining a higher protein intake—about 1.2–2.0 g per kg of body weight per day—is very important for patients using GLP-1 medications for weight loss.

Why this matters?
When you lose weight quickly, your body can lose not just fat, but also **muscle (lean body mass). Losing too much muscle can lead to:

Slower metabolism (making weight regain easier)
Weakness and fatigue
Higher risk of falls, especially over age 50

The challenge:
GLP-1 medications can make it harder to eat enough protein because:

You feel full quickly
You may lose interest in heavier proteins like meat
Digestion slows down, causing bloating or nausea

How to get enough protein comfortably?

Eat protein first before vegetables or carbs
Use protein shakes or collagen if solid food feels too heavy
Support digestion with enzymes (especially protease)to reduce bloating and nausea

Getting the right balance helps protect your metabolism, maintain strength, and support healthy, sustainable weight loss.

When should you take digestive enzymes?

For best results, take digestive enzymes with your first bite of food** or right before you start eating.

Why the “first bite” matters:

Better mixing: Enzymes blend with your food right away, helping break it down more effectively.

Improved digestion:They support your stomach as it begins the digestive process.

More contact time: Enzymes have longer to work on proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, leading to better absorption and less discomfort.

Taking enzymes too late (like after finishing your meal) may reduce their effectiveness.

If you struggle with indigestion, bloating, or poor digestion, digestive enzymes combined with the right herbs and nutrition plan can make a big difference.
