I've worked with these Brit homeowners in the City of Decatur over many years, most recently to add curb appeal for the sale of their house before returning to England. This was achieved using bright annuals to frame the entryway, sharpening edges with mulch, and some gentle pruning to keep everything in scale. The garden has beautiful established shrubs and trees, including deciduous azaleas, tea olives, anise and oakleaf hydrangeas. Please share the details if you know anyone looking!

Anticipation...so many developing fruits, so many squirrels. Fortunately I'm content to admire the beauty, support local wildlife, and enjoy the odd mouthful!

Lovely New York Times article about ferns: “When we plant ferns in the garden or in containers indoors, we get to live with some of the oldest organisms on the planet...Maybe if we spent more time with ferns, we’d learn something of their secret to living with grace, beauty and strength.”
If You Think You Know What a Fern Is, Think Again Some live in water; others grow on trees. In 400 million years, these versatile plants have developed some surprising variations.

These heirloom bearded iris were planted in a client's garden many years ago. The client moved away, but the blooms keep coming back every year!

I'm increasingly a fan of no-till gardening unless creating a totally new planting area. I've always enjoyed the permaculture adage that if you're working too hard, you're not doing it right. This article is interesting, and I loved the description of worms as "ecosystem engineers".
