How Play Therapy helps with self regulation:

Play therapy helps children develop self-regulation by giving them a safe, structured way to express and process their emotions. Because young children often lack the words to explain what they feel, play becomes their natural language. Through toys, role-playing, and creative activities, children are able to act out experiences, release tension, and make sense of overwhelming feelings.

In play therapy, the therapist guides the child in identifying emotions, practicing coping skills, and learning appropriate ways to respond to frustration, anxiety, and anger. Over time, children begin to recognize their emotional triggers and develop healthier responses, such as using calming strategies, problem-solving, and seeking support.

Play therapy also strengthens the child’s sense of safety and connection, which is essential for regulation. As children feel understood and supported, their nervous system becomes more balanced, allowing them to better manage impulses, tolerate distress, and adapt to challenges.

Ultimately, play therapy builds the foundation for lifelong emotional regulation by helping children feel, understand, and manage their emotions in a developmentally appropriate way.

The Impact of Excessive Screen Time on Children

In today’s digital world, screens are a part of everyday life—but too much screen time can have a meaningful impact on a child’s development, behavior, and emotional well-being.

Excessive use of phones, tablets, and video games can interfere with a child’s ability to develop important skills such as attention, self-regulation, and social interaction. Children who spend long periods on screens may struggle with focus, become more easily frustrated, and have difficulty managing their emotions. Over time, this can contribute to increased anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances.

Screen time can also replace critical experiences children need for healthy development, such as face-to-face interaction, imaginative play, physical activity, and connection with caregivers. These real-world experiences are essential for building communication skills, confidence, and emotional resilience.

While technology can be a helpful tool when used appropriately, balance is key. Setting consistent limits, encouraging screen-free activities, and prioritizing meaningful connection can help support your child’s overall mental and emotional health.

If you’re concerned about your child’s behavior, attention, or emotional regulation, counseling can provide support and practical strategies for both children and parents.

Being a former foster parent, and mother of adopted children, I can not stress enough the importance of therapy for ALL children in foster care, regardless of how well you think they are adjusting.

Counseling plays a vital role in supporting children in foster care, who often face complex emotional and psychological challenges due to trauma, loss, and instability. Many of these children have experienced abuse, neglect, separation from caregivers, or multiple placement changes, all of which can impact their sense of safety, trust, and identity.

Through counseling, children are given a safe and consistent space to process their experiences, express emotions, and develop healthy coping skills. Therapy helps them build resilience, improve emotional regulation, and form secure attachments with caregivers. It also supports behavioral stability, which can improve placement success and overall well-being.

Early and consistent mental health support can significantly reduce the long-term effects of trauma, helping children in foster care develop confidence, strengthen relationships, and move toward a more stable and hopeful future.

Separation anxiety is a normal part of childhood—but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. 💛

If your child struggles with drop-offs, bedtime, or being away from you, you’re not alone. Some common signs include clinginess, frequent worries, physical complaints (like stomachaches), or big emotions during goodbyes.

The good news? There are ways to help:
✔️ Keep goodbyes short and consistent
✔️ Stick to routines
✔️ Validate feelings while encouraging bravery
✔️ Practice short separations to build confidence

With support, kids can learn to feel safe and confident—even when you’re not right beside them.

If your child’s anxiety is interfering with daily life, extra support can make a big difference. We’re here to help. 💬

Early Intervention is Important:

Research consistently highlights that the early years of a child’s life play a vital role in shaping brain development, emotional well-being, and overall learning. Investing in early childhood during this crucial stage helps set the foundation for children to grow, thrive, and achieve their full potential both now and in the future. When young children experience nurturing environments and responsive, supportive relationships, they are more likely to develop the skills needed for success in school and throughout life. There are many therapeutic Interventions starting with children as young as 2 years of age.
