National Police Week is May 10th-16th, 2026. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. We honor the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Parents, lean in. We need your help.

We are seeing a concerning rise in children operating high-powered e-bikes and electric motorcycles that they are legally prohibited from riding due to their age, and they are riding them in prohibited locations. This isn't just about rules—people are getting hurt.

We want your kids outside enjoying themselves, but it is your responsibility to ensure they are operating within the bounds of Georgia law. Ignorance won't prevent a severe injury, and it doesn't exempt anyone from the legal consequences.

The law is very clear: high-speed electric two-wheelers are not treated as standard bicycles. Depending on their speed and power output, many of these are legally classified as motor vehicles. They require a driver's license, registration, insurance, and a DOT-approved motorcycle helmet to operate, and they are strictly banned from sidewalks and multi-use paths.

Please review the graphics and info below to properly identify your child's vehicle. Check the top speed, the motor output, and ensure they are legally allowed to ride it where they are taking it. Let's work together to keep our roads and paths safe for everyone.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week has arrived!

Each year during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW), we take time to recognize the people who answer the call when it matters most, our 911 dispatchers. They stay calm in crisis, manage complex situations, and support first responders every single day. While we appreciate them year-round, this week gives us a chance to do something extra.

What Is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week?

NPSTW, celebrated this year from April 12-18, shines a national spotlight on the commitment and calm professionalism of 911 dispatchers. These individuals work intense shifts, make split-second decisions, and carry emotional weight far beyond the call. They serve as the first line of support during emergencies, and their impact remains undeniable.

Please be aware of railroad crossing closures in the coming days at E. Trinity Place and N. McDonough Street due to maintenance. Each crossing is expected to be closed for approximately 24 hours.

During the closure, vehicles will not be able to cross the railroad, but pedestrian access will remain open. Please proceed with caution. Detour signs will be posted for drivers, and routes may vary depending on direction of travel. Drivers should allow extra travel time and follow posted signage.

On Friday, March 20, 2026, at approximately 2:34 p.m., the Decatur Police Department responded to the intersection of South Candler Street and Kirk Road in reference to a Decatur Police Department School Crossing Guard being struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, the crossing guard was alert and conscious. The investigation revealed the vehicle was turning left onto South Candler Street from Kirk Road. The crossing guard was crossing South Candler Street traveling eastbound in the crosswalk with the pedestrian walk signal. The driver of the vehicle struck the crossing guard while making the left turn. The driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The crossing guard was transported to a local hospital.
