A FASCINATING RING: Dating to c.1480, this bronze ring is engraved with the initial "R" crowned, with sprigs engraved on either side. This ring would have originally been fire-gilded, and traces of the original gilding remains.
English in origin, this ring may have been owned by a Court servant or scribe. At this date, the "R" can only stand for King Richard III, but the middle classes who did not own land were still prohibited from wearing gold or silver.
As with most 15th century signet rings, this ring is huge; a size 16 or UK X. Rings such as this were worn on the thumb, and used to seal documents. If my theory is correct, this is an incredibly rare find. Available; DM for details.
