It takes a village.
Changing a profession is the mission.
This army is leading that mission.
The incredible people at is a must-have part of that process.
I'm so fortunate to be surrounded by people where I have to work like hell just to keep up.

Pain in your shoulder when you try to go overhead? Give one of my all time favorites a go and try to hold for about 2 minutes 🔥

Found out today that is inarguably the best player around.

I've been lucky enough to have known my wife for legitimately all my life. One of jess' first memory of me is making fun of her for "crying" in class (she swears to this day it was just allergies)
Even in the beginning I was never a fan of Valentine's Day. Flowers, chocolates, balloons...all the manufactured and extrinsic validations of "see how much I care about you" never really did it for me.
So I decided to do something different this year. Instead of flowers that'll wither away in a couple days, balloons that will just be thrown away (after sucking out some of the helium of course)...I bought us a course on developing a legacy as a family, grow stronger in our values and will be something we build on for years to come.
Easily my all time favorite gift of the 13 Valentine's Days we've shared together
We still had some chocolate too though 👌

This quote comes from a 36 year old former collegiate athlete and avid triathlete who said this while explaining how mild back pain slowly crept up to the point to where now they are nervous to even pick up their children.
This patent feels like they can’t enjoy the activities they used to
This patient feels anxious about the return of the pain
This patient has battled depression because of their pain
This patient is not alone.
Pain by itself is rarely what brings people into the clinic. It’s the inability to pursue and enjoy activities that they used to be able to.
It’s pain that now affects who they are as parent, spouse, human being.
If you, as a healthcare provider, are not keeping this bigger picture in mind. Then you are, at best, doing your patient a disservice.

These scribbles and truly horrendous display of handwriting may not look like much, but it’s the result of one of the most powerful tools we have as human beings.
Listening
I had a patient come in yesterday confused and frustrated by a recent flare-up in his back pain after weeks of no pain and continued progress. He was lost in his thoughts and felt like he was spinning his wheels.
So we mapped things out. Talked through his past couple weeks and days leading up to his increased symptoms and here is what we found.
1. Spent the last week on vacation (which is great!) but didn’t sleep very well while he was there
2. Drove 6 hours nonstop
3. Had to deal with some family matters as soon as they got home
4. Continued to not sleep well and have increased anxiety surrounding handling the situation
What do all of these have in common? Not a single thing we talked about involved something that "injured" his back
Instead, by asking deeper questions, avoiding diving straight into special tests and simply listening, we were able to walk out of the clinic with signicantly less back pain.
Moral of the story. People are complex. Take the time to listen to be present and listen their story, situation, journey.
