Join us this Tuesday, June 2nd, for a Salon with Sarah Turquety from 6:30-8PM. Our enCore: Dance on Film festival premiere screening will be happening concurrently in our downstairs studio from 6-8PM.

Guests are invited to move between the Salon and the Premiere to engage with both events. Why join us for one incredible art event when you can attend two at once? 🙌🏻⚡️

The closing weekend of propositions for residue...what remains at Leicester Gallery marks the culmination of an exhibition in continual transformation through two days of art, experimentation, performance, and shared experience in the UK.

Throughout the exhibition, artists and audiences have gathered around process-based practices, interdisciplinary exchange, and evolving forms of creative inquiry. The final weekend continues this exploration with propositions that invite reflection and conversation across movement, image, sound, and installation.

Presented at The Leicester Gallery at De Montfort University, residue...what remains has centered artistic experimentation as both process and proposition, creating space for work that shifts, accumulates, and transforms over time. The closing events reflect the exhibition’s ongoing investigation into what remains through artistic practice, collaboration, and collective experience.

Drawing further from DMU’s Zurbrugg Collection and now on display in ‘residue…what remains,’ ‘Sea and Land’ is a 1967 screenprint by poet, artist, writer and gardener Ian Hamilton Finlay in collaboration with designer Herbert Rosenthal. It is a concrete poetry piece composed of six blue horizontal lines crossed over by seven brown vertically-angled lines each symbolising the sea and the land, signified by the words ‘sea’ and ‘land’ written in blue and brown respectively.

Minimalist in its composition, Finlay blurs the line between textual poem and visual artwork through reducing the land and sea into their most abstract yet essential forms, producing a symbolic illustration of the two entities and a means by which the viewer is able to reflect not only on their colour and physical differences, but also about the essential interwovenness and dynamic equilibrium of the two.

In this way, ‘Sea and Land’ sits comfortably within the Fluxus movement for its direct confrontation with ideas of continual action and the importance of process, and in thinking of ‘what remains’ appeals to the Fluxus ideal of being an eternal network of practice.

ALEX SPITZER
Alex Spitzer is a professional choreographer and dancer in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently he dances with Beacon Dance since 2014 and on their Board of Directors. He is also on the Board of Directors for the National Dance Society. He was Artistic Director of the Spitzer Dance Company from 1992-2022. He has been recognized nationally and internationally. Presenting full evening concerts, lecture demonstrations, and workshops for schools and the public, Alex, through SDC, has toured to Los Angeles, Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, and Knoxville. In Los Angeles and Boston he performed in two International Dance Festivals. In Orlando he choreographed and danced a solo in the Opening Ceremony of the Federation Internationale De Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA) World Cup 2017. Alex has danced with Infinity Dance Theater in New York City and Duende Dance Theater in Atlanta.

Alex, in 1999 received his B.A. degree in Dance from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, holds the distinction of being the first Dancer in a wheelchair to receive a four-year degree in Dance in not only the U.S. but in the world. “His view of himself as purely a Dancer rather than as a ‘wheelchair dancer or disabled dancer’ makes him unique in the dance world. The strength of that view combined with the artistry of his choreography and his dance create a powerful manifestation the truth of this belief.” He studied dance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and while there his work was presented in the American College Dance Festival Gala Concert in San Marcos, Texas. Alex has studied in modern, ballet, jazz, and integrated dance techniques.

FRAMES explores the surveillance, scrutiny, and framing of women in a post-feminist context. Drawing on the Johari Window, the work asks what we know about ourselves, what others know about us, and what remains unseen by all.
