GROCERIES TO GO!

The Decatur Police Department and Food Bank of North Alabama are teaming up Saturday, Sept. 19, to provide free groceries to community members who need food assistance.

The drive-thru distribution will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon, or until supplies run out, in the rear parking lot of Decatur City Hall, 402 Lee St. NE.

Drivers should follow the attached traffic map and directions from officers at the site.

Please remain in your vehicle while volunteers load the groceries.

Help us spread the word to neighbors who may benefit.

The Decatur City Council will roll up its sleeves during tonight’s Work Session, which begins at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Decatur City Hall.

Council members will review several items scheduled for consideration at the
Monday, Sept. 21, City Council meeting, including:

- Upgrades to downtown street lighting
- New traffic circulation standards
- Transportation planning support for Decatur’s planned intermodal facility
- Alley improvements near the CCI Cancer Center
- School resource officer and emergency dispatch agreements
- Proposed changes to landfill disposal and recycling processing fees
- A sand volleyball lease agreement
- An Air Products donation to Decatur Fire & Rescue

The Sept. 21 City Council meeting will begin at 10 a.m.

Twenty-Five Years Later, We Remember.

Today, the City of Decatur honors the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. We remember their families, the survivors, the first responders who ran toward danger, and all who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

May we never forget the courage, compassion, and unity Americans showed one another in the face of tragedy.

Flags at City of Decatur facilities are flying at half-staff today in observance of Patriot Day.

Final Laps. Lasting Legacy.

Swimmers returned to the Aquadome on Thursday morning to log some final laps and revisit memories made across generations.

After more than 57 years of swimming, recreation, competition, and community, the Aquadome will end regular operations Sunday, Sept. 13. Programs will move temporarily to Fort Decatur Recreation Center before the new Decatur Recreation Center opens Monday, Sept. 21.

“We have the past, the present, and now the future,” Mayor Kent Lawrence said.

A FULL AGENDA. ONE DECISIVE EVENING.

The gavel came down, and several major projects moved forward.

The Decatur City Council unanimously approved all 17 resolutions Tuesday night, including two new leaf-vacuum trucks, construction of a new landfill cell, property for a Carnegie Visual Arts Center annex, and an agreement for a public access road near Point Mallard Parkway and Country Club Road.

Council members also scheduled eight rezoning hearings, approved four alcohol-license requests, and recognized the Decatur Police Department’s state accreditation.

The Council meets at 6 p.m. to consider two new leaf-vacuum trucks, major rezoning requests, regional landfill improvements, a public access road near Point Mallard Parkway and Country Club Road, a potential Carnegie Visual Arts Center annex, Fire and Rescue restructuring, and an amendment to the Rock the South agreement.

The meeting also includes a presentation of state accreditation for the Decatur Police Department.

A LITTLE LABOR DAY BREAK

Even City Hall gets a day off for Labor Day.

A NEW WAY TO MAKE A SPLASH AT POINT MALLARD

City and State leaders, Decatur Parks and Recreation, and project partners gathered this afternoon to cut the ribbon on Point Mallard Park’s new accessible kayak launch, floating dock, and self-service kayak rentals.

The new amenity gives residents and visitors another way to explore Flint Creek and the waterways surrounding Point Mallard. Paddlers may bring their own nonmotorized watercraft or reserve a single or tandem kayak through HIVE PaddleSports.

Rentals include a kayak, paddle, life jacket with whistle, and dry bag. HIVE’s self-service system allows paddlers to reserve and unlock their equipment using a mobile device.

The launch is near the walking trail between Point Mallard Water Park and the pickleball complex. It provides access to the Flint Creek Exploratory Paddle Area and routes leading toward the Tennessee River.

The Decatur City Council authorized up to $170,000 for the project, which also required approval from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

BUDGET REQUESTS FIRST. A PACKED SEPTEMBER AGENDA NEXT.

The Decatur City Council will meet at 4 p.m. today to hear from nonprofits and agencies seeking funding in the city’s proposed fiscal year budget. A council work session will follow.

Council members will preview next week’s agenda, including eight rezoning requests, a proposed $264,000 Carnegie Visual Arts Center annex, Cherry Street sewer design work, a new public access road near Point Mallard Parkway and Country Club Road, Fire & Rescue restructuring, landfill and recycling fee changes, and an amended Rock the South agreement.

The agenda also includes $357,859 in fourth-quarter budget adjustments and a proposed pay increase to recruit and retain CDL-certified Landfill and Recycling truck drivers.

Tonight’s work session is for discussion. Proposed actions are scheduled for the
Tuesday, Sept. 8, regular meeting or subsequent public hearings.
