A new school year, new teachers, and one message that fits Decatur perfectly.

We had a great time this morning at the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce’s annual New Teacher Welcome Breakfast for Decatur City Schools at First Baptist Church. We proudly cheered on the outstanding educators joining one of Alabama’s great school districts.

Superintendent Michael Douglas also unveiled the district’s mantra for the year: “Better Together.”

We could not agree more. A unified school district helps build a unified community because, In Decatur, We Are Better Together!

Big projects are on tonight’s menu at City Hall.

The Decatur City Council will gather for its 5 p.m. Work Session to dig into several major items, including the 4th Avenue parking garage, proposed improvements at Modaus Road and Fairground Road, athletic field construction, a contract involving Wilson Morgan Recreation Center, and Decatur Police Department agreements.

The next regular City Council meeting will be Monday, August 3, 2026, at 6 p.m.

The City of Decatur is heartbroken by the loss of Chris Seal, a longtime employee of our Parks and Recreation Department.

Chris faithfully served the City of Decatur and its residents for 21 years. He was a valued member of our City family, and his loss will be deeply felt throughout our organization.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris’ family, friends, coworkers, and all who knew him. We ask our community to keep them in your prayers and respect their privacy during this difficult time.

What is on the table at City Hall?

Today, the Decatur City Council will meet for a work session at 5 p.m. to discuss items for the July 20 City Council meeting.

Topics include:
• Intersection improvements at Country Club Road and Alabama 67
• Funding support for the Spirit of America Festival and North Alabama Airfest
• A proposed sewer extension for River Road Estates
• Annexation, zoning, and property matters
• Updates to truck driver positions and compensation

Work sessions give council members time to review proposals, ask questions, and discuss the details before the regular meeting.

The Decatur City Council meets tonight, with the Work Session starting at 5:30 p.m. and the Council Meeting following at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Tonight’s agenda includes items related to the Dinsmore Slough Trail Project, Whistle Bend Park, planning and zoning software, Decatur Fire Rescue equipment, Public Safety Training Center upgrades, Historic District sign replacements, Wilson Morgan Park access improvements, Decatur’s 2026 street conditions, Calhoun sports complex funding, a District 3 voting precinct relocation, sewer infrastructure, and the Decatur Youth Services new facility.

That’s a pretty full Monday night, Decatur.

America turned 250, and Decatur understood the task.

From the parade to the car show to a packed night of concerts, Saturday’s Spirit of America Festival delivered a full day of red, white, blue, and a whole lot of Decatur pride.

Decatur native Jordan “Lamont” Landers rocked the field as our headliner, and the fireworks delivered in a big way after a brief summer-storm delay. Apparently, even the weather wanted a front-row seat for America’s 250th.

Thank you to everyone who came out, celebrated with us, and helped make this year’s festival one to remember. Special thanks to our city employees, sponsors, volunteers, vendors, performers, first responders, and community partners for making the day possible.

Now, that’s how you celebrate 250 years in the South.

The grounds? Ready.
The waterpark? Ready.
The fireworks? Waiting patiently for their 9 p.m. main-character moment.

Saturday, Point Mallard Park hosts the 60th annual Spirit of America Festival as Decatur joins the nation in celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

Come early for the events. Stay for the food, music, waterpark, community, and all the red, white, and blue fun leading up to the fireworks show at 9 p.m.

City offices will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

Friday garbage routes will run Monday, July 6. No other routes will be affected.

So, enjoy the fireworks, fire up the grill, and give that garbage cart one extra weekend to think about its choices.
