We found out the reason the previous builders put that out of place bench seen underneath the shower faucet.

Instead of rerouting the pipes through the wall they decided to come up through the floor and have the pipes come out and around the floor joists that were blocking the way to the shower faucet. To hide this they built a bench around the protruding pipe without ever consulting the homeowners.

Heres what the bathroom looked like before. You can see even from this distance how angled the slope of the shower floor is.

The homeowners wanted a clean cut, minimal styled bathroom.
