Colton Rose, Jacob Smith So I've thought about best way to tell about the "lost cannon". Mayb this attempt will make sense. Very condensed version and not grammar checked but here goes.
colonel A.P.Hill ordered on the night of the 18th of June 1861 at Romney Virginia( now West Virginia)Colonel John C. Vaughn of the 3rd Tennessee Regiment among others was Company "I" which was made up of mainly Meigs County men under Captin N.J. Lillard to march to New Creek bridge Depot when arriving on the morning of 19th Col. Vaughn orderd a Charge which resulted in a small skirmish and capture of two brass cannons and a stand of colors. The cannons was spiked however they was hauled back to A.P. Hills headquarters at Romney.
One account states: "one of the small brass cannons was given to company "I" as a trophy, but was lost in fording a river on return to wi******er. The flag captured was cut up into small pieces and distributed among members of the company and sent back to their sweethearts back home.
Another statement says Col. Vaughn gave one of the little brass Howitzers to company "I" but it was lost by the carelessness of a teamsters in crossing the Shenandoah river and hence the trophy never reached Meigs County.
Private C.W. Atchley said one cannon carried a ball the size of a wal nut with the hull on and the other of a walnut with the hull off.
1st Corporal J.H. Guinn's account written in 1918 says "We captured two pieces of artillery, one small brass piece,The company all wanted this to send home."
Another states say it was lost in the river before they got back to wi******er.
So the Shenandoah River is below wi******er and a couple of the statements say the cannon was lost before they got back to Wi******er from Romney and they are atleast 14 creeks and rivers between the two places so I'm not 100% if Shenandoah River is correct or just mistaken but I have reached out to people and no one has heard of a brass cannon being found in a river yet.
