“Without Shade, Without Rest” looks at extreme heat and the lack of protections for outdoor workers, told through the lived experiences of workers and organizers in Florida. The film is grounded in observation and conversation, and is designed to be experienced collectively and followed by dialogue.

We are glad to support the fight for heat standards that help protect all workers from heat stress regardless of their immigration status. On farms, in kitchens, at construction sites, and in any environment where extreme heat is present, workers are fainting and suffering from inadequate water, rest, and shade. This is the time to stand up for our shared humanity and safety—people’s lives are at stake.

This film was created by a small independent nonprofit documentary team, , based in Florida. Their work focuses on climate, labor, migration, and is grounded in long-term relationships and on-the-ground reporting. Their team comes out of investigative journalism and nonfiction media, with experience working alongside outlets such as FRONTLINE, ProPublica, and The New York Times. At this community screening, we’ll be joined by the incredible and .

We are so grateful and glad to be supporting the work of groups like and to make sure all workers—regardless of their immigration status or language background—are aware and empowered to keep themselves and their coworkers protected from extreme heat.

Mandatory breaks, shade, and water are factors that all workers should be guaranteed, and these conditions can be the difference between a safe and unsafe workplace. In industries like construction, restaurants, agriculture, and so many more, the battle for safeguards against extreme heat continues 🧑‍🌾👷🔥

Our Bilingual Worker Rights Organizer Lucia joined to table and share our critical Know Your Rights materials! We shared resources on your rights if law enforcement knocks at the door of your home, and Lucia also provided information on how workplaces and workers can prepare to be safe in the event of a workplace ICE raid or I-9 Audit.

Today, April 28th, is Workers’ Memorial Day. On this global day of remembrance and action, we grieve those we’ve lost—and we organize so fewer families and communities have to endure preventable workplace tragedy.

Today, we launch the Worker Leaders Solidarity Fund, an ongoing fund that sustains our worker-facing, worker-led organizing—especially through our Worker Advisory Committee (WAC). Our WAC is composed of survivors of the 2021 nitrogen leak at a poultry processing plant in Gainesville, Georgia.

Since the leak, these worker leaders have continued to guide education and organizing—often at personal risk, including intimidation and threats related to immigration status. We believe worker leadership must be respected, resourced, and not exploited.

We are sharing urgent information with our immigrant community and allies: Reports indicate that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are being deployed to U.S. airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. While the presence of ICE agents is purported to focus on supporting TSA, ICE agents can still perform immigration duties. This is a vital time to keep your community informed and remember your legal rights.
