It’s a marvelous place to visit. Been twice on Poe’s birthday weekend celebration. Go if you can and support them through membership.

The Happiest of Birthdays to The Poe Museum, which opened onthis day in 1922! (A highlight of the Poe Museum's first public event was hosting a talk by Edward Virginius Valentine, a man who had met Poe seventy-three years earlier — an event your admin truly wishes I could have witnessed in person.) For over a hundred years the Poe Museum has been preserving and honouring Mr. Poe's life, works, and legacy — the noblest of causes! A toast to you, Poe Museum!

ASTOUNDING NEWS! On this day in 1844, Mr. Poe's Balloon Hoax appeared in the New York Sun, citing that the “Atlantic Ocean has been actually traversed in a balloon, and in the incredibly brief period of Three Days! Eight persons have crossed in the machine." Mr. Poe set up his hoax almost a year earlier, publishing, under the pseudonym John Wise, an article in the newspaper Spirit of the Times that stated that a “well-known balloonist plans to take a trip across the Atlantic Ocean in the summer of 1844.” Your admin can picture Mr. Poe giddily waiting until almost a year had passed in anticipation of publishing his great hoax.

We're pleased to announce our next exhibit in Paradise Garden's Museum & Visitor Center, "35 Years at Paradise Garden," photography by Mikel Yeakle, on view March 7 through May 24.
And you're invited to the public reception at at 2:30 PM Saturday, March 7, which will include an artist talk by Mikel!
Mikel first visited Paradise Garden in the late 1980s, making his earliest photographs in 1989. He returned repeatedly in the decades that followed, developing an ongoing relationship with the site. Rather than capturing a single moment, the work unfolds as a photographic meditation on Paradise Garden shaped through sustained observation, intimacy and time.
Most of the works on view are composite images that created through digital layering of photographs made at Paradise Garden across those years. Rather than single-moment views, these merge multiple exposures into unified compositions.
A native of Indiana and a longtime Atlantan, Mikel and wife Cyndi now make their home just inside the Georgia state line, near Mentone, Alabama. He is vice president of the Mentone-based Little River Arts Council, a group that has been an exuberant participant in Finster Fest for several years.
