Thinking about adding a new service, opening a new branch, or making a big move next year?

Don’t start by buying the trucks.

In this week’s Grow Show, Marty shares the simple 3-step process Grunder Landscaping Co. uses before making big changes: learn, test, invest.

Too many companies flip the order. They invest first, then try to figure it out later. That’s expensive. The disciplined companies learn from others, test on a small scale, look for real proof, and only then put serious money behind it.

Growth should create opportunity, not chaos. And if you have good people inside your business who are ready for more, planning ahead is how you give them a path without betting the whole company on an untested idea.

Learn first. Test second. Invest third.

🤳🏼 If your social ads have burned money before, don’t write them off yet.

Paid social can work for landscape companies, but the setup matters.

Start with your strongest project photos. Test different audiences before committing budget. And always geotarget the areas you actually serve so you’re not paying to reach people who will never become clients.

None of this has to be complicated. It just has to be done with a plan.

In this week’s Great Idea, we share three practical ways to improve your social media ads and make your marketing dollars work harder.

Want to go deeper on marketing and sales strategy? Join us for Virtual Sales Manager Bootcamp on July 8–9. We’ll cover how to build a marketing plan that supports your sales goals, plus forecasting, sales meetings, and more.

If everyone on your team thinks like you, that might feel easier… but it won’t make you better.

In this week’s Grow Show, Marty talks with author Steve Shapiro about why the people who challenge us are often the people we need most. Different perspectives, personalities, and experiences can feel uncomfortable at first, but they’re also what keep a company from getting stale.

Because if you only hire people who fit the mold, eventually the organization grows mold.

The best teams don’t need everyone to think the same way. They need enough trust to disagree well, ask better questions, and see problems from more than one angle.

If you’re building a team, take a look around. Who’s missing from the conversation?

🌱 June is a checkpoint.

Are you ahead of plan, on track, or working to close a gap?

By now, most leaders have a pretty good sense of where things stand. The important part is what you do next.

That is why this month’s message is so timely. Execute the plan. Communicate clearly. Identify the gaps early. Stay focused on the work that matters most.

The strongest leaders do not wait until year-end to adjust. They make the right moves now.

Your next sale might come from the job your crew is doing today.

At GLC, we remind our team often: everyone is in sales. Not because every person is writing proposals, but because reputation drives new business.

On the sales side, the same idea applies. Don’t wait for clients to ask about enhancements. Schedule property walk-arounds, look for opportunities, and bring helpful ideas to them before they have to ask.

Doing a little bit more doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be consistent.

In this week’s Great Idea, we share simple ways production and sales teams can work together to drive more business.

And if your team needs help sharpening those skills, our virtual sales trainings are built for landscape pros who want to finish the year strong.

🤔 If your sales meetings feel boring, unclear, or pointless, don’t be surprised when your sales team starts to feel the same way.

In this week’s Grow Show, Marty shares how to run sales meetings that actually create momentum. Not complaint sessions. Not motivational speeches. Not reporting meetings where one person talks the whole time.

Real sales meetings create clarity, accountability, alignment, and action.

Start with wins. Review the scoreboard. Let the team talk. Practice real sales scenarios. And never end without clear commitments.

Because nothing happens till someone sells something and your sales meetings should help make that happen.

What is the best use of your team’s time?

That was one of the biggest questions raised in our conversation with Michael Ding of Bobyard on The Grow Show.

In many landscape companies, talented people spend hours buried in manual takeoffs, measurements, and repetitive estimating tasks. Work that has to get done, but work that does not fully use their experience, judgment, or ability to solve problems.

AI can help speed up the measuring.

But it still takes people to think critically, assess risk, communicate with clients, plan projects, and make smart decisions for the business.

The companies that win with AI will not be the ones that replace human thinking. They will be the ones that create more space for it.

If your estimating process is consuming too much of your team’s time, this episode is worth listening to.

Busy season tests your leadership.

The schedule changes. Crews get stretched. Clients need answers. One rainy day can throw off the whole week.

At GLC, Marty’s role during this time is simple: be the team’s biggest cheerleader.

The goal is to support the team without taking over.

In this week’s Great Idea, we share a few practical ways owners and leaders can show up better when the season gets heavy.

And if you want to see how these leadership habits work inside GLC, join us at a Grunder Landscaping Co. Field Trip. You’ll meet the team, see the systems, and learn directly from the people doing the work every day.
