As part of the ongoing efforts to identify policies that promote mental well-being at work, iiChange developed a case study examining Homefull’s workplace culture and how it aligns with former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy’s Framework for Mental Health & Well-Being in the Workplace.
Homefull is an organization working to end homelessness through housing, services, advocacy, and education. By listening closely to their employees, Homefull has built policies and practices that reflect what their people need to thrive at work.
From flexible scheduling and paid time-off incentives to ongoing training, professional feedback, and community-building opportunities, their leadership team has created an environment where employees feel supported and valued. They’ve gone a step further by recognizing the unique challenges their staff face in their field, making meaningful investments to support physical and psychological safety.
When organizations invest in the wellbeing of their people, they strengthen their ability to serve our communities. Congratulations to the leadership team and staff at Homefull for building a culture of wellbeing!
At iiChange, we’re proud to spotlight organizations doing this important work so well and to support leaders and teams who want to build healthier, more resilient workplaces.

Ted Lasso, a Transformational Leader
My new favorite TV show is Ted Lasso. The series is a comedy about an American college football coach, Ted Lasso, who goes to England to manage a professional football (soccer) team, knowing next to nothing about soccer or British culture. The show is funny, poignant and Ted displays many characteristics of an iiChange Transformational Leader.
Ted chooses behaviors that reflect a leader who is confident in their intrinsic value. He believes, with the help of his trusted assistant coach, he will be successful with the AFC Richmond football team and the skeptical fans, who call him bad names, do not faze him. Ted’s definition of success is not the typical measure of having more wins than losses, it’s about making a difference in the lives of his players. As a leader he understands if each footballer is their best self and choses to put aside their egos for the value of the team, winning games will happen. He encourages those who report to him to continually improve by telling them what they do well and authentically helping them see how they can improve. “Are you Ok?” is a question Ted asks often. He listens to the answer because he is empathetic and really wants to know.
Ted looks for and can find the special, unique intrinsic value in everyone. He remembers the names of all his staff regardless of their position in the organization. He encourages everyone to provide input, and when appropriate, incorporates their ideas into his coaching giving credit where credit is due. He’s not afraid to admit when he has made a mistake and is open about his own relationship difficulties knowing that all humans experience ups and downs.
Each episode is rich in portraying Transformational Leadership beliefs and behaviors. Additional themes include:
· Stay curious. Don’t judge or make assumptions. Ask questions
· Team members support each other during the highs and lows. “It’s ok to be sad. It’s not ok to be sad alone”
· Ask for help. A problem is not solved at the same level in which it was created (Einstein quote)
· Believe in hope
· No matter what you do, you cannot make another person happy/unhappy
· Every disadvantage creates an advantage
· Forgive those who have done something against you. Recognize what motivated their behavior and have compassion.
· A new one for me…when you feel you’ve been wronged, be a goldfish they have the shortest memory on earth.
Whew! This is from the 1st season of Ted Lasso! I can’t wait to watch season 2. Will you join me?
