The best part of Saturday mornings: tiny cleats, big effort, and a sideline full of laughter. Fall league week 5 was fun!

Happy National Coaches Day!
Today we celebrate the incredible individuals who give their time, energy, and encouragement to help players learn, grow, and love the game. Pictured are just some of our Davis Community Soccer coaches this Fall!
On the Field: Our coaches are committed to player development and our core values. They are trained to help players improve technically and tactically in age-appropriate ways, while also building confidence, character, teamwork, and a lifelong love of soccer.
Beyond the Field: They are parents, lawyers, engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, community leaders, and more who are deeply connected to the Davis community. They become a coach for many different reasons: some love the game, some want to be part of their kids' experience, some want to give back, and some were "volun-told" and stepped up big time. Whatever brought them to the sideline, they showed up, and our players are better for it.
Thank you, coaches, for all you do! Share a thank-you or add to our photo collection in the comments!

Referee spotlight:
If you've been lucky enough to be refereed by one of these three young women, you already know what a well-run game feels like.
They show up with professionalism every time. Gear on. Arrival on schedule. Prepared to manage the game and keep it fun, fair, and safe.
Refereeing means making quick decisions with players, coaches, and parents watching, and staying calm when emotions run high. These three handle it with a maturity that's impressive at any age. They know the rules, they communicate clearly, and they treat everyone on the field with respect.

Coaches Brooke and Carrie held a quick debrief after a fun game (a 4-4 tie!) with their U10G Tidal Waves team. Instead of lecturing, they did something simple and powerful: they asked the players questions.
Some questions a coach can ask:
What is one thing you're proud of from today's game?
What was your favorite moment?
Who on the team did something that helped you or made you smile?
What is one thing we could try next time?
Way to go Tidal Waves!

Some things we loved this past week:
Players jumping straight into play. Players arrived at practice and went right into a scrimmage, with no waiting and no warm-up lecture. That energy is a credit to our coaches for creating an environment where kids can't wait to get on the field. Way to go, coaches!
Our first Referee Reward raffle winners. Congratulations to Andrew W. ($25 gift card) and Noah S. (referee bag)! Our referees are a big part of what makes game day work, and this is one small way we say thank you. Every time a referee signs up for a Fall League game, they're entered for a chance to win.
A parent tunnel for everyone. The referee, all players, and coaches ran down a tunnel of cheering parents. A happy reminder that sports are about celebration, community, and growth.
Flexibility when a game had to move. Thank you to the coaches and teams who adapted when a game changed locations. Shifting plans on short notice isn't easy, and your patience kept the game on the schedule and the kids playing.
Post-game snacks for everyone. Snacks after the game are a fun tradition for the players, and we loved seeing them shared with the referees too, and with the person behind the camera capturing the memories. It's a small gesture that makes everyone feel like part of the team.

Grateful for community! 🙏
This season, we needed space multiple times for over 100 coaches and 30 referees to gather for training and season details and the Davis Arts Center stepped up every time! Thank you to Sam, Scout, and the entire Arts Center team for helping us host successful events.

Welcome new referees! Did you know that over 60 new referees were trained this season?!
We're incredibly proud of the growth in our refereeing program and grateful to the dedicated trainers and mentors who made it happen.
All Fall League referees are volunteers. Their time and commitment make Fall league possible. Select and United used paid USSF referees with many starting out in volunteer positions for experience and mentorship then coming back for experience, mentorship, and because it’s fun! The DCS referee pathway includes community trained and USSF trained officials to help retain referees.
DCS player registration fees cover training, gear, awards, and mentorship for all new referees. In competetive leagues fees cover referee payment as well. This approach access, removes barriers, and helps Fall League games have referees at them.
At their first games and throughout the season you’ll see referee mentors working with crews on the sideline and post game.
On field experience is essential to learning to referee! And the more games we can support referees at the more safe, fair, and fun games will be for everyone.
Refereeing is for everyone! Adults, it's a great way to stay active, get some exercise, and stay close to the game. We're always looking for adult volunteers to support our youth players and help keep games running smoothly and no experience is necessary, since full training is provided!
For our youth referees especially, officiating is more than just exercise, it builds professionalism, teaches them to work with all kinds of personalities, and sharpens quick, level-headed decision-making under pressure. These are skills that will serve them well as they enter the workforce down the road. Whether you're a parent, a former player, or just someone who loves soccer, there's a place for you as a referee.

Big shoutout to Coach Eric, Peter, and Miguel for the culture they've built so far with their 2026 Fall League team this season.
They show up energized every single time, and it rubs off on the kids fast. Everyone is moving and engaged with no laps, no lines, no lectures leading to more touches, more reps, and more soccer. And they know if the kids are laughing, they're doing it right.
Their dedication is making a difference in countless lives this Fall! Go Green Geckos!
