A new study published in Nature analyzed 120 years of agricultural research across 184 meta-analyses and found that diversification practices can increase financial profitability, biodiversity, soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration over time.

Among the findings:
🌱 Up to 189% increase in financial profitability over 20 years
🌱 64% increase in biodiversity
🌱 Significant improvements in soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration
🌱 Crop yields maintained over time
🌱 Long-term win-win outcomes for productivity and ecosystem services

The study highlights the long-term value of diversification practices such as crop diversification, organic amendments, and other approaches that support more resilient agricultural systems.

As growers adopt these practices, understanding how soil biology responds becomes increasingly important. Greater visibility into the biological processes occurring belowground can help support more informed management decisions and long-term soil health outcomes.

At Biome Makers, we're committed to making soil biology visible so farmers, agronomists, and the broader agricultural community can better understand and manage the living systems that support productive and resilient agriculture.

Before increasing fertilizer rates, ask a better question: What if the issue isn't nutrient supply?

Two fields can have similar soil test results and fertility programs, yet perform very differently because of what's happening biologically below the surface.

Microbes influence whether nutrients are made available to the crop, tied up in the soil, or lost from the system.

Understanding those biological processes can help growers make more informed decisions about fertility, product selection, and management practices.

Understanding life below ground has never been more important.

We're proud to see our Lead Agronomist, Dr. Jacob Parnell, among the authors of this newly published paper exploring the global assessment of soil-dependent species and the growing effort to better understand and protect soil biodiversity.

The study represents an important step toward improving our understanding of the life below ground and its role in supporting healthy ecosystems, resilient landscapes, and sustainable food production.

At Biome Makers, we believe that better understanding soil biology is key to supporting healthier soils, more resilient agricultural systems, and a deeper appreciation of the biodiversity beneath our feet.

Farming has become a game of expensive decisions.

Every fertilizer application, biological product, crop protection pass, and management change has to work harder when input costs are high and margins are tight.

The challenge is that many of these decisions are still made without a clear understanding of what is happening below the surface.

Traditional soil testing shows what nutrients are present, but soil biology helps reveal how nutrients are cycled and made available to the crop.

That is where the ROI of soil biology begins.

In our latest blog, we explore 5 ways microbial data can help growers protect farm margins, improve input efficiency, and make more confident agronomic decisions.

We’re excited to share that Sarah Basiri, CRO at Biome Makers, will be speaking and chairing at The Future of Food & Beverage Forum USA starting tomorrow in Minneapolis.

Sarah will join speakers from Front Porch Farms and Grain Millers, Inc. for the breakout session: “Let’s be honest about soil health: Leveraging ag-tech for simple, comparable metrics that can drive farmer collaboration and profitability”

📅 Wednesday, May 27, 2026
⏰ 1:50 PM – 2:40 PM
📍 Minneapolis, Minnesota

We’re also excited to have Taniell Liepner, CPG Lead at Biome Makers, attending as part of our team.

Looking forward to conversations around regenerative agriculture, soil health, biodiversity, and how science and technology can help create measurable impact across the food system.

If you’ll be attending, we’d love to connect.

11 years ago in San Francisco, Biome Makers started with a mission to better understand soil and help agriculture produce healthier food while improving the planet.

Today, that mission continues to drive us.

Over the past 11 years, together with our global community of farmers, agronomists, advisors, partners, and customers, that mission has grown into a global effort advancing soil intelligence to support more sustainable and resilient agriculture.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey and helped shape the future of soil health with us. We’re excited for what comes next as we continue advancing the future of agriculture from beneath the surface. 🌱

Access to soil intelligence should not be a VIP club for large operations.

Small and medium-sized farms make big decisions too.

Fertilizer. Biologicals. Crop protection. Disease management. Every choice matters when input costs are high and margins are tight.

Thanks to some exciting upgrades to our Smart Sampling System, BeCrop Farm can now better support operations of any size.

With this new improvement, more growers can access soil biology insights to optimize input use, identify disease risks earlier, understand field-level variability, and make more confident decisions.

Because better data should not depend on farm size.

For a limited time, new small and medium farm projects are eligible for 20% off.
