Honoring One of Our Own: Unaccompanied Veterans' Burial Service

No veteran should take their final journey alone.

The community is respectfully invited to attend the burial service for an unaccompanied military veteran. With no immediate family present, we ask fellow veterans, service members, local organizations, and community members to stand in unity to offer full military honors, respect, and gratitude for their service to our country.

Whether you are a veteran, a active-duty military member, a first responder, or a local resident, your presence ensures that this veteran receives the dignified farewell every defender of our nation deserves.

Agent Orange Awareness Month is observed in August, with Agent Orange Awareness Day specifically recognized on August 10. According to the Blinded Veterans Association, August 10 honors the bravery and sacrifices of those affected by the chemical, marking the day in 1961 when Agent Orange was first used in Vietnam ! The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund also observes August 10 as Agent Orange Awareness Day, with events such as placing thousands of orange candles at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ? Some advocacy groups extend the observance through the month or even October to foster education, support, and accountability 3. In Wyoming, August is officially designated as Agent Orange Health Awareness Month, with the governor issuing a proclamation each year to encourage observance and health screenings 4.

Today we honor the birthday of the U.S. Department of Defense.

On August 10, 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act Amendments, creating the unified Department of Defense and strengthening civilian leadership over our Armed Forces. Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Guardian, Coast Guardsman, and veteran since has served within the command structure born that day.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the president to those wounded or killed while serving on or after 5 April 1917, with the U.S. military. With its forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located in New Windsor, New York.

Today, we celebrate the 236th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard and honor the generations of Coast Guardsmen who have safeguarded our nation's waters, protected our shores, and answered the call with courage, dedication, and selfless service.
