Congratulations, James Sullivan () on being featured in Patron Magazine’s June/July Arts Influencers issue⭐️

In his post-academic life, James continues his own art practice while engaging with the next generation of artists. As he says, “I’ve always treated students as co-artists, as collaborators in some way, shape, or form.”

With more than 40 years of experience, James works across sculpture, installation, performance, drawing, and prints, and has exhibited in over 25 solo and two-person exhibitions across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, including at the Meadows Museum of Art in Dallas, Amerika Haus in Berlin, and the Museum Moderner Kunst in Passau. He is Professor Emeritus of Sculpture at SMU, where he served as department chair for 17 years, and currently serves as President of the Board at the Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency. He has been represented by Conduit Gallery since 1990.

Thank you and for this recognition.

We’re pleased to present LIFE-SIZE, an exhibition of new paintings by New York-based artist Catherine Howe.

Opening reception Saturday, June 13 | 5–7 PM

Howe’s botanical paintings move between representation and abstraction, rendered in iridescent mineral pigments and metal leaf that shift with the light. Flora uprooted from earthly constraints, animated into something between the physical and the ethereal.

On view through July 25

Gallery artist presents Fortune at this Saturday, May 30th, 3–6pm.

Members of the public are invited into an intimate exchange. Present your palms and receive your fortune, transcribed onto paper for a small fee. The reading and writing is entirely silent, structured around two questions: where are you coming from? where are you going to?

The project inquires into trust, intimacy, and power. Through the figure of the fortune teller, it raises questions about belief, desire, class, and cross-cultural interaction. Note: fortune telling is illegal in New York City.

In conjunction with the closing of Same Time, Same Place.

The Lobby is located underground at 154 E Broadway. Reserve via the link in ’s bio.

Fortune has previously been performed at Conduit Gallery (2014) and (2019).

DYNAMATIC

Three tubular steel sculptures, as poetic as they are industrial, their multi-gauge tubes connected with both welds and wing-nuts. Strikingly sincere in their materiality, the works evoke movement and changeability through gestural forms and removable fasteners. Visible tool marks and scars speak to their temporality, while spontaneity and careful engineering combine to form delicately balanced abstractions suggestive of figuration and movement.

In the Quasar series, crochet’s propensity for spontaneous redirection is utilized. The ambiguous forms result from the accumulation of improvised loops in a single strand of thread. Linen is used in reference to a painter’s canvas, but here substrate and form are one and the same. Silver leaf both embellishes and distorts the underlying structure.

See a large collection of the Quasars at the gallery.

On view through May 30

SIX SMALL PAINTINGS marks a timely shift in Ludwig Schwarz’s practice, away from the cyclops portraits that occupied close to a year of his work and toward abstraction with non-objective leanings and a taste for storybook presentation. The works are both of the world and made in a vacuum.
