Opportunity Rising
The Opportunity Rising Foundation believes that education can help lift low-income residents out of poverty.
With the support of donors and sponsors, Opportunity Rising provides access to postsecondary education and success for DHA students.
The cost of pursuing an education goes far beyond tuition.
Books, supplies, housing, meals, and other expenses add up quickly for students on track to earn their degree. In fact, the average estimated cost for students attending college in Texas ranges from $20,000 – $30,000 annually. According to NPR, college tuition has essentially doubled over the past 30 years.
Through scholarships for eligible DHA residents, the Opportunity Rising foundation helps ease some of that financial burden so students can keep moving toward their educational goals. For the past 30 years, we have awarded 1,385 scholarships and internships worth $2,061,518, which have supported students attending colleges all over the country.

From September 15 – October 15, we honor and celebrate the contributions, history, and culture of the Hispanic and Latino community— and the scholars that are building on that legacy through their educational endeavors.

At this year’s Opportunity Rising Scholarship Ceremony, we celebrated our scholars, their accomplishments, and the people who help make their educational journeys possible.
The event was a reminder of what can happen when students are supported with resources, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed.
For more than 30 years, Opportunity Rising has awarded over $1.9 million in scholarships through employee contributions, grants, and corporate donors, helping students pursue their goals and build brighter futures.

There’s something special about seeing an investment in education come full circle.
When its doors first opened in 2011, Dallas ISD’s Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) welcomed Ontario Brown as one of its first students. After graduating, Ontario obtained a scholarship from Opportunity Rising to help him continue his education and earn his college degree from Texas Christian University.
Today, he’s returned to BOMLA as a teacher, helping cultivate leadership and building opportunities for a new generation of students.
Recently interviewed by CBS News Texas, Ontario shares that his experiences as a BOMLA student has shaped his teaching philosophy and the impact he’s now making in the classroom. We could not be prouder to see an Opportunity Rising scholar using his education and experience to make a difference in the community that helped make him be the leader and professional he is today.

For many DHA families, factors like income, access to academic support, exposure to college and career options, and enrichment opportunities can shape the pathways available to students. These differences in circumstance do not define a student’s potential.

Meet Ontario Brown, a 2017 Opportunity Rising Scholar, graduate of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, and recipient of the Troy Broussard scholarship.
More than 9 years ago, he stepped onto the campus of Texas Christian University, where he became the first African-American Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA) and made an impact across the campus.
As he shared with us when he was in high school, Ontario knew that he wanted to be an educator, coming back to serve the community he grew up in, but providing not only algebra lessons but also reaching beyond academics, teaching students lessons to prepare them for life.
A man of his word, Ontario Brown, is a recognized and award-winningDallas ISD educator who invests his time and talent serving the students of Dr. L.G. Pinkston Sr. High School as an algebra teacher and chess and gaming coach.

As we mark the 250th anniversary of Independence Day, we are reminded that history is not just something to reflect on; it is something to learn from and understand.
We encourage scholars to take time to explore U.S. history, including the governing documents that continue to shape our rights and responsibilities today. Because these documents matter today as much as they did when they were written.
When we know that when we understand history, we are better able to understand the present and better prepared to advocate for ourselves and our communities.
Celebrate this Independence Day by using education as a tool for awareness, empowerment, and long-term opportunity.
