Experimenting with watercolor some time ago, I painted this with the intent of capturing the grey, somber mood of that September morning in 2024 as I walked along the banks of the Red River in Louisiana. Humidity and fog hung thick in the air. Then, a cool, refreshing light rain began to fall. It was a welcome reprieve from the unrelenting, oppressive heat that is the norm at that time of year. I also made an oil painting of this scene; however, I prefer the watercolor as it seems to best capture the fragility of the moment. Sometimes the most beautiful moments are the ones that feel a little heavy. Watercolor on paper, 7.25” x 11”

Here’s another plein air study from my recent trip to Galveston. I’ve always been drawn to architecture, even if those complex angles keep me on my toes. The East End Historic District is a painter’s dream—50+ blocks of perfectly preserved Victorian and Greek Revival homes. I could easily spend weeks lost in these streets with my brushes. There’s something special about the way the light hits these 19th-century gems. If you’re ever on the Island, the East End is a must-see.
