A Broward County woman has pleaded guilty in connection to the 2023 starvation death of 7-year-old Deonte Atwell, a child with special needs who weighed just 7 pounds when first responders found him on Christmas Day, according to investigators.
Mirlande Moltimer, 49, entered a guilty plea Thursday in Broward County court to charges including third-degree murder. Prosecutors previously alleged the child was tortured as part of a Medicaid fraud scheme tied to a Medicare provider company investigators said Moltimer owned.
Judge Peter Holden told Moltimer she could have faced up to 65 years in prison under Florida law, but the plea agreement means she will avoid the maximum sentence. She is still expected to serve federal prison time connected to previous convictions in the case, followed by seven years of reporting probation.
Several others were also arrested in connection with the case, including the childâs mother, grandfather, adult brother, and a nurse.
