Drawn from the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University, these photographs visually explore the animal kingdom and its inhabitants. Furthermore, the images examine our relationship with animals as well as the dynamic between members of different species."

For years, Adam Jahiel has been photographing the cowboys of the Great Basin, perhaps one of the most inhospitable regions of the already rugged West. These people represent one of the last authentic American subcultures, one that is disappearing at a rapid rate. Cowboying as an art form is almost obsolete; still, the cowboys hang on, with a ferocious tenacity. Respect there doesn't come from the trappings of modern life. Talent, knowledge and skill are valued above all else. And the cowboy tradition has its roots in the oldest of human conflicts: man against nature and man against himself.

Jahiel tries to reflect those sentiments in these photographs. These cowboys aren't “remade” into a Hollywood image. Instead, they are “found” images, in keeping with the spirit of authenticity that permeates the best keepers of this tradition.

Join PDNB Gallery for a curator talk with Missy Finger at James Harris Gallery! This event takes place during the opening reception of Radical Vision, from 3 – 7 PM, at James Harris Gallery in Dallas, TX in the Design District

Spanning six decades, Radical Vision brings together works by Lucien Clergue, Margaret Hicks, György Kepes, Ida Lansky, Karl Straub, Edward W. Quigley, and Lotte Stam-Beese. Though concise in scale, the exhibition traces photography's evolution beyond its traditional role as a document of a single moment, revealing how artists transformed the medium into a site of experimentation, abstraction, and perceptual inquiry.

Bank Langmore
April 6, 1935 – May 10, 2020

Bank Langmore, born in 1935, left a corporate job in Dallas in the 1970s to become a photographer. His first major assignment was to photograph the American cowboy. He traveled throughout the West, spending time on working ranches still practicing traditional ranching methods. The 35mm cameras he used gave him the freedom to move, get close to the action, and respond quickly to light and mood. He had an eye for people, not the glamorous kind, but the working kind. His photographs convey the cowboys’ toughness from years of laboring under the sun, but there’s humor and love as well. Bank’s vintage prints from the 1970s are classics of western photography.
