This National Cancer Survivors Month we recognize the strength of patients and the compassionate care teams who walk with them through every stage of their cancer journey. At 65, lifelong musician Rick Shaw never expected to go from the roar of concerts to the quiet of a radiation machine, but a 2023 check-up revealed stage 3 prostate cancer.
After a robotic prostatectomy the following January showed the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, Rick was referred to Radiation Oncology Specialist Charles Matthews in Texarkana, who promised care for both body and spirit.
Rick completed 39 radiation treatments, spending the sessions listening to worship music and praying with fellow patients. His PSA levels are now undetectable, and today he returns not for treatment, but to encourage others on the same journey.

Congratulations to our Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital teams for completing their 10th Barostim™ procedure! Delivering gentle electrical pulses to the baroreceptors, Barostim™ increases signals to the brain, reducing the stress response and improving heart failure symptoms. The procedure typically takes about an hour, and the system contains no hardware in the heart or vasculature. This milestone reflects the collaboration between our congestive heart failure clinic and our ongoing efforts to bring the most advanced options to our patients.

Community health extends far beyond the hospital walls—it’s built in neighborhoods, parks, and shared moments of care.
During Community Health Improvement Week, we're proud to highlight the partnerships and volunteer efforts that strengthen our communities.
From an annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway to working with Keep Tyler Beautiful on park cleanup, to the beloved CHRISTUS Day at the Miracle League of Tyler Field, where associates serve as “buddies” for athletes of all abilities, these efforts bring people together in meaningful ways.
Each reflects a simple truth: improving community health takes partnership, presence, and compassion. Whether through a shared meal, a cleaner park, or an inclusive playing field, CHRISTUS Health is committed to strengthening the communities it serves—one act of service at a time.

At 34, Cami Tuttle, a wife, mother of three and former nurse, knew the signs of a stroke, but never thought it would happen to her.

Her first symptoms came in the middle of the night and quickly resolved. Trusting her instincts, Cami contacted her primary care physician at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in San Marcos, Dr. Mariel Bagley. Dr. Bagley identified subtle warning signs and immediately sent her to the emergency room, where teams confirmed she had a stroke, but there were still questions.

After other symptoms arose, Cami was transferred to our Westover Hills facility, where specialists used advanced imaging to review her scans before she arrived, allowing the neurology team to prepare for immediate treatment. She was diagnosed with a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a microaneurysm and underwent a successful procedure.

From emergency care to advanced neurologic treatment, every step of Cami’s journey across CHRISTUS facilities was connected through coordinated, compassionate care.

May was EXTRA snuggly in our NICU and Mother-Baby Unit as we celebrated our two-week Kangaroo-care-a-thon! Kangaroo care is a special method of holding a baby skin-to-skin, similar to how kangaroos hold their young in a pouch!
For moms, it promotes bonding, boosts breast milk production, reduces anxiety, and enhances their ability to understand their baby's cues. Dads also experience bonding benefits, stress relief, and a sense of protectiveness.
In total, our facilities logged over thousands of minutes of Skin-to-Skin during the two-week celebration!

Our valve program at Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital has earned national accreditation from the American College of Cardiology, marking the third time it's achieved this prestigious recognition! As one of only 12 valve programs in Texas, this distinction reinforces our role as a leader in advanced heart care for East Texans.
Completing more than 100 valve procedures each year, the program gives our physicians and care teams deep experience in treating complex heart valve conditions through an integrated approach and has completed nearly 1,000 valve replacement procedures.
