Inyang Essien is a Nigerian-American visual artist and filmmaker based in Dallas, TX. Perspective inspires me.

There are so many ways to look at one thing, be it an idea, photograph or even lifestyle. Photography gives me the opportunity to give my perspective on the things around me.

So grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Lenora Rolla Juried Art Show this year! Thank you to and the judges for selecting ā€œBuffalo Soldiersā€ as the Best of Show, Runner up! 🤩

I had the invaluable experience of spending time with and documenting the Buffalo Soldiers and Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club-Dallas in 2021. Both organizations are committed to serving the community through volunteering and supporting youth through education and financial support.

Our paths in life are shaped by a multitude of factors, each as unique as the individuals who experience them. The choices we make, the challenges we face, and the perspectives we hold all contribute to the distinctiveness of our individual paths.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with self-portraiture. It was challenging to build the airplane, but fulfilling once complete! Guess how long it took?? šŸ˜…

More to come from this series, including BTS.

Our Rice lightbox installations are now live until June 3, 2024, across University of Toronto, Mississauga campus!

Our Rice is the first in the three-cycle exhibition called
Overseeding: Botany, Cultural Knowledge and Attribution and is meant to uncover contributions that radicalized people have made to botanical knowledge, previously obscured by European colonialism.

It’s so surreal to see this work being illuminated at this scale and I’m forever grateful.

Visit the link in bio for a write-up on the show and images. Thank you to all who had a hand in bringing it to life!

***Reposting since I’ve seen this many places with credit.

Rice, seeds, and grains were braided into the hair of the enslaved that would later serve as sustenance. The hairstyle—cornrows—hid rice and even seeds as they traveled with no belongings through the Middle Passage. During slave rebellions, this technique was revisited by women of the Maroons of Suriname to ensure that they would have food to grow when they escaped to the rainforest. These images were created to help visualize this piece of history.

Since creating the initial images in 2020, I’ve expanded the body of work to include images of the cornrow maps and ā€œcornā€ to visualize other communication and survival techniques that were implemented by the enslaved.
