Biomimetic Study Club
Biomimetic dentistry is an emerging field that aims to preserve tooth structure and "mimic nature". The Place for Biomimetic Dentistry.
Biomimetic dentistry is exploding! A properly trained biomimetic dentist is able to do everything from dramatically increasing the life of your restorations to reducing the need to treat teeth endodontically. Biomimetic Dentistry is a paradigm shift and is challenging the mindset of traditional dentistry. We specialize in bringing these concepts and resources closer to you. We find the most up to

How about a game of Eye Spy. How many of these products do you recognize? I used to hate dental materials while in dental school. It was hard to grasp the significance of the ranges of numbers, how strong it was, how it behaved when you tried to break it, and then all the reasons why it mattered and how to apply them. It got complicated quickly. Then throw in real life and how you have all the options at your disposal and can buy whatever kind you wanted. Learning biomimetics helps bring all those into focus. We need certain materials to work certain ways depending on where we’re at in the tooth. Now, I love learning about materials and all the intricacies that they have. If you’re ever in doubt on which material to use, look back at the natural tooth and see how it’s behaving and look to replicate that!

Amazing work by 🎃 love the method for layering bringing in the tooth’s natural morphology! Smile Makeover with Direct Composite Veneers - The Simplified Approach Simple • Repeatable • Predictable
A fully freehand buildup using the TPA
Technique for precise palatal shell construction.
This approach ensures:
• Accurate control of incisal edge position and curvature.
• Efficient layering sequence for optimal form and translucency.
Seamless integration between dentin and
enamel shades.
• Minimal finishing time with maximal natural aesthetics.
Designed to provide a systematic, clinically repeatable workflow for anterior composite veneers - combining simplicity, control, and predictability in every case.
lol. Love and hate this article. The question is, “Is there anything we can do to make universal bonding agents better?” Well, yes there is. We’ve always said that we can make any material work within biomimetic protocols, and this article gives us those steps. But the question then becomes, why are we trying to improve universal bonding agents and why not just go with the tried and true gold standard bonding systems? Regardless, this article is good for that. If enough people want it, I’ll include it in the biomimetic starter pack! Yes, I’m starting that back up again! HMU
Four main goals of biomimetic dentistry. What do you think? Anything I’m missing? These four things will keep patients coming back and will help grow your practice from word of mouth. Do quality work and people will find you.

Fantastic work from treating a peripheral fracture caused by the amalgam. It’s always good to look at the structural analysis of the teeth and what potential issues could be caused by it. I always look at the size of the faulty restoration, the depth of it, along with any potential cracks or symptoms that it might be happening. Well done 👏

Here’s a five year follow up on an onlay we did. This is was needed due to an amalgam filling that fractured. Always love to see these results! There’s no signs of this slowing down. No pain, no symptoms, it’s been smooth sailing so far. He’s a happy patient especially considering that the patient originally thought he’d need a root canal and crown. I’d call it a win!

Biomimetic dentistry has grown far beyond a list of “approved” materials. It’s a philosophy — a mindset that prioritizes bonding to preserved tooth structure, sealing dentin immediately, and managing stress through careful layering and design.
But what happens if you can’t get SE Protect, Optibond FL, or Ribbond in your country, or if your distributor is back-ordered? Are you suddenly non-biomimetic? Of course not.
The truth is, many materials can perform beautifully if used within the biomimetic principles of sealing, stress reduction, and adhesion preservation. There are clinically acceptable substitutes — based on current evidence and real-world success — to use when the ideal materials aren’t available. Biomimetic dentistry isn’t about brand loyalty — it’s about biological honesty.
The materials matter, yes, but your understanding of why they work matters even more.
You can be in a small clinic, rural setting, or a country where SE Protect or Ribbond aren’t sold — and still deliver world-class biomimetic results. The secret lies in your bonding discipline, layering technique, and commitment to preserving natural structure.

A nice caries clean out can be one of the most stressful procedures. Sometimes this can take years to feel comfortable. But doing these well can dramatically improve the life of the restoration and increase your bond strengths. It all starts from the ground up. Nice work by

This is why we study the anatomy of teeth. Each layer has a specific role that it plays in the function of the tooth. Each layers plays to the optical properties and the esthetics. Choosing the right materials to mimic all that becomes that much more challenging. This is a masterclass in knowing anatomy and dental materials. Well done by 🤩

Oh yeah! I’ve been a bit MIA lately. Meant to say earlier, I’ve been helping spread minimally invasive dentistry to the AEGD residents at Texas A&M. Always love educating and showing what’s possible with dentistry once you understand the sciences. The application, sometimes, can be the hardest part!

Do the simple things right and fall in love with the process. That’s the true path to success in my opinion. All of the details will build off each other. Before you know it, you’re at a completely different stage than where you started. Fantastic work by 🤩
