Our Board Certified Pediatricians are concerned about the outbreak of measles in Texas. One of our most important jobs is prevention of diseases which we do via vaccination, and guidance. We are here to protect, reassure, and care for our patients as always.

MMR vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent your child from developing measles. The risk of developing measles decreases by 97% after having 2 doses of the MMR vaccination. Vitamin A is only prescribed by physicians if a child has measles to prevent complications of Vitamin A deficiency which can develop due to having measles infection. It is NOT treatment for the measles. There is NO TREATMENT for measles, other than supportive care which can include hospitalization. Patients with measles often develop secondary infections

The usual recommendation for MMR administration is to begin with dose #1 at 12-15 months of age with the second being given at 4-6 years of age. However, during an outbreak a dose can be given as early as 6 months of age, and the second dose can absolutely be given before 4-6 years of age but at least 28 days between dose 1 and 2.
