On Thursday, May 28, at 12:47 p.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) was dispatched to a 911 call for a gas leak at an apartment complex, in the 400 block of E. 9th street. While en route to the location, an explosion occurred and the response was upgraded to a structure fire.
The incident ultimately escalated to a 5-alarm fire response, resulting in approximately 120 firefighters on scene to mitigate the situation. DFR also had to evacuate residents from a neighboring apartment complex to the east and a small house to the west.
After the fire was contained, fire personnel began the process of combing through debris of the collapsed two-story structure to search for trapped residents. The search incorporated the services of DFRβs and the Dallas Police Departmentβs Drone Teams as well as K-9 Services, but it eventually transitioned from search to recovery mode.
At this time, three fatalities have been confirmed.
A total of three (3) people were transported to local hospitals, one in critical condition, the other two with non-life threatening injuries. Two other people self-transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The city is providing hotels and support for displaced residents.
Please keep the families affected and our first responders in your thoughts and prayers.

π¨πLife Saving Award Alert π¨ π
On March 6, 2026, paramedics arrived to find a 62 year old man in cardiac arrest. After 16 minutes of CPR and other life-saving measures, paramedics were able to regain a pulse. The patient was transported to the hospital and later walked out neurologically intact.
We also set a record today! Jake Rathbone is the youngest DFR member to receive the Life Saving Award and it happens to be his birthday. Chief Ball and Station 32 sang happy birthday to him. Congratulations and great job, bubbas!

DFR responded to a home on the 4000 block of Hall showing heavy smoke from the garage of a 2-story apartment complex. First arriving crews pulled a rapid attack while another crew was cutting a hole on the roof for vertical ventilation. Firefighters knocked down the garage before heading upstairs to get into the attic. No one was injured. Great job by all the crews that responded πππ

ππ₯Today, Dallas Fire-Rescue proudly recognizes the members of Engine 8 and Battalion 3C for receiving an Outstanding Unit Citation, along with Fire-Rescue Officers Dustin McCrory and Trevor Walsh, who were each awarded the Fireground Excellence Award for their lifesaving actions during a structure fire on February 14, 2026.
Engine 8 and Battalion 3C responded to a two-story apartment fire on Annex Avenue and arrived to find heavy smoke showing and a civilian trapped at a second-floor window. Under the direction of Acting Battalion Chief Kevin Carlin, Engine 8 quickly shifted into rescue mode.
Fire-Rescue Officer Dustin McCrory positioned and stabilized a 24-foot extension ladder while Fire-Rescue Officer Trevor Walsh climbed through worsening heat and smoke to reach the victim at the window. Today, Dallas Fire-Rescue recognized members from Station 32 and EMS Supervisor 783 with Life Saving Awards for two separate incidents where outstanding prehospital care made all the difference.
On October 22, 2025, crews treated a 62-year-old woman found unresponsive. After immediate CPR, several shocks, and more than 20 minutes of sustained effort, crews regained a pulse before reaching the hospital. She later walked out of the hospital.
On November 11, 2025, crews responded to a 34-year-old man who was unresponsive. Through CPR, defibrillation, and epinephrine, they were able to save his life. He also later walked out of the hospital.
These two incidents are powerful reminders that excellent prehospital care saves lives. Today we honor the Station 32 members and EMS Supervisor 783 whose calm, decisive actions made these outcomes possible.
Please join us in congratulating these members on two well-earned Life Saving Awards.ππ₯π
