Most people who have disability insurance get it through their employer. 87%, actually. That's a great starting point.

But it's worth knowing what "covered" actually means. Group plans typically replace 40-60% of your income, and that's before taxes get taken out. For a lot of households, that gap is the difference between staying in your home and not.

Two other things worth knowing about group coverage:
It usually doesn't follow you when you change jobs. And the monthly benefit is often capped, regardless of how much you earn.

Individual disability insurance plugs both holes. More replacement income, and it stays with you wherever you go.
