We continue to celebrate by highlighting black leaders who made an indelible mark on the lives of Americans. Follow along as we share their remarkable stories and honor their important role in our history.
Dr. Charles Richard Drew, 1904—1950
Dr. Charles Richard Drew was an acclaimed African American surgeon who pioneered the ways to process and store blood plasma in blood banks, ultimately being named, “father of the blood bank.”
Dr. Drew discovered how to store and preserve blood plasma, or blood without cells, so that plasma could be dried and reconstituted. By separating plasma from oxygen carrying red cells, he significantly improved the shelf-life. As the leader in the field, he headed the U.S.’ Blood for Britain Project (BFB), an effort to transport much needed blood and plasma to Great Britain during World War II and went on to become Medical Director of the National Blood Donor Service for the American Red Cross. Among his innovations were refrigerated mobile blood donation trucks, later called “bloodmobiles.” He resigned from the Red Cross after a ruling that segregated blood by race and returned to Howard University as chair of the Department of Surgery where he made it his mission to improve the field of medicine for black physicians. Dr. Drew even went to be the first-ever examiner for the American Board of Surgery. His accomplishments were vast, having an immeasurable impact on modern medicine.

Chidiebere Ibe, 1996—present
Chidiebere Ibe, 25, is a Nigerian first-year medical student and self-taught medical illustrator. His illustration of a black fetus in the womb went viral in 2021 after noticing a lack of diverse representation in medical textbooks. “I believe everybody deserves to be seen,” he said. “In the U.S. there are a lot of health care disparities. So this is a call to everybody that everybody should matter, and there should be health equality for everybody.” Ibe continues to create medical illustrations of black people and some of his work will soon be published in a clinical handbook.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler 1831- 1895
In 1860, Rebecca Crumpler became the first African American woman accepted to the New England Female Medical College in Boston. Dr. Crumpler graduated in 1864 becoming the first African American woman physician in the country. She had a passion for helping women and children and cared for patients formerly enslaved regardless of their ability to pay. In 1883, she published "A Book of Medical Discourses" which focused on care for infants and women. It is believed to be the first medical text written by an African American author. Due to her work, Virginia’s governor declared March 30th as Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler Day. There are no surviving pictures of Dr. Crumpler.

Alice Ball 1892-1916
In 1915, Alice Ball became the first woman and the first African American to graduate with a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii. She was also the university's first female and African American chemistry professor. While working on her thesis, Alice developed the “Ball Method” which would become the leading treatment for leprosy during the 20th century. She discovered a way for oil from the seed of the chaulmoogra tree to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Sadly, Alice passed away shortly thereafter. This treatment was the primary treatment until the 1940’s, but it wasn’t until the 1970’s that she received proper credit. Until then the director of her program attributed her findings to himself. Historians unearthed the truth and worked to ensure that Alice received the acclaim. Now February 29th is celebrated as Alice Ball Day in Hawaii.
As we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on his incredible contributions to the civil rights movement. His message of positive change will forever be a reminder to embrace our differences and continue to ask, “What are you doing for others?”
