After 50 years on Maple Avenue, the Stoneleigh P picked up its Christmas lights, old-timey photographs, and bras (donated by patrons to adorn the chandelier) and moved less than two miles away to Lemmon Avenue in 2024. When writer Joseph Guinto moved back to Dallas from D.C., he looked forward to visiting the bar he had frequented decades ago. So were other regulars for a while, but most have since split, leaving owner Tom Garrison and his daughter, Laura Garrison, struggling to turn a profit at the new location. Guinto relates it to the Ship of Theseus problem. “That ancient ship was rebuilt so many times—new planks, new rigging, new hull—that philosophers asked: was it still the same ship?” he writes. Other historic Dallas bars have faced similar quandaries. Like The Loon, which has moved twice from the dank, windowless location that made it a favorite. Or Milo Butterfingers, which has been totally gutted. “Walking the tightrope between modernity and nostalgia isn’t easy, and the Stoneleigh P has had to do it not by its own choice,” Guinto writes. “But here’s the thing. Different is not bad.”
