Dr. Sarah Tevis is a part of the inaugural Institute of Functional Dentistry (IFD) cohort! The IFD is the world’s first residency-level functional dentistry certification program that also combines the Institute of Functional Medicine (AFMCP) accredited program. The program is built on: systems biology and oral-systemic science, evidence-based education, training clinicians to treat the whole patient, not just the mouth. Dentistry and medicine have operated in silos for too long. IFD exists to close that gap through a new lens. We are so excited to be in this group and to share more knowledge with our patients and with our referring health care providers!

Out of the office Dr. Tevis can sometimes be found on a river fly fishing! It is good to have hobbies that get us out in nature. Being near or in water has beneficial healing energy and is calming.

Our doctors attended the (IABDM) International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine conference in Austin “Biohacking in Dentistry”. They enjoyed courses on the dangers of mercury exposure, cellular detox, red light therapy, Vitamin C therapies, ozone, peptides, zirconia implants, 3D imaging to look for extraction sites that don’t heal, vitamins and nutrition, biologic surgeries, oral microbiome testing, hyperbarics, and more. More to come…

We love transforming healthy smiles! This case we started with Invisalign to improve the teeth alignment and the bite, creating room for very conservative veneer preps to keep as much natural tooth as possible. Then, we created a cosmetic mockup design with our lab technician. This allowed us to create the veneers with the end result in mind and trial temporaries to ensure we like the design. The final veneers were bonded on and then protected with Invisalign retainers.

Lycopene may help patients with gum disease or who are at risk of periodontal disease. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, researchers found nearly 50% of people had periodontal disease and also insufficient dietary lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables such as: sun-dried tomatoes, tomato paste and sauce, guava, watermelon, grapefruit. Cooking tomatoes increases Lycopene availability. Other health benefits of Lycopene include: cancer prevention, lowering LDl cholesterol, improving blood pressure, and skin protection against UV damage.
The mouth and body do not work in isolation. The body’s nitric oxide production is a clear example of that. It is a vascular messenger and regulator of circulation. A driver of healing, oxygen delivery, immune response, and regeneration. And part of its production lives in the mouth. Your oral microbiome participates in cardiovascular function. Your breathing patterns shape your biology. Your daily hygiene choices can either support or suppress one of the body’s most important healing pathways. Support nitric oxide production by not using harsh mouthwash, ensure nasal breathing instead of mouth breathing, and by eating a nitrate rich diet of leafy greens 🥬 and beets
