On January 1st, 1895, a theatrical poster reshaped the art world—and launched the career of Alphonse Mucha. Commissioned with only six days’ notice, Mucha’s design for Sarah Bernhardt’s role in Gismonda broke every convention. Unveiled at the dawn of electricity, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Nautilus Lamp with Mermaid Base defies expectations of the Tiffany style: no leaded glass, no Favrile iridescence—just a striking bronze mermaid and an imported nautilus shell.  Sculpted by Louis Gudebrod (notably the only artist whose work was credited by Tiffany Studios), this lamp debuted at London’s Grafton Galleries in 1899 and triumphed at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.  Its synthesis of modern design, marine naturalia, and mythological form signals a turning point in the history of decorative arts.
