During Black History Month, our students have been learning about influential black artists who have made an impact in the music industry. An artist one of our students chose to highlight is Ray Charles.

Ray Charles was born on September 23rd, 1930. He was born in Albany, Georgia but raised in Greenville, Florida. At five years old, he began playing the piano and a year later a 6, he contracted glaucoma. Glaucoma is a type of eye condition that damages the optic nerve, which is needed to have good vision. It is caused because of an abnormally high amount of pressure in the eye and is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults over the age of 60. He began studying writing music in braille and learned how to play various instruments at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind. His father passed away when he was 10 years old, and his mom passed only 5 years later. In 1949, Charles released his first single “Confession Blues” which did well on the R&B charts, along with all his other songs. He was seen as a pioneer of soul music with his integration of R&B, gospel, pop, and country music. Ray Charles was nominated for 37 Grammys and won 17. He was also awarded with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, with 10 of his songs being inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. A quote from Ray Charles said, "I never wanted to be famous. I only wanted to be great." Charles passed away on June 10th, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California.

Our last artist of Black History Month is Ella Mai! She was raised in London, then moved to New York at 12 years old and then moved back to England after her high school graduation. She competed on The X Factor with the group Arize while attending music school, but the group didn't pass the initial audition and later split up. Mai did end up seeing success as a soloist, though, when DJ Mustard caught wind of her music on SoundCloud and Instagram, and signed her in 2016. She made her debut in February of that same year, which included the song "She Don't." She followed up with more EPs, "Change" and "Ready," which was the home of perhaps her biggest hit "Boo'd Up." The song was nominated for several Grammy awards and won for Best R&B Song in 2019. She has remained relatively quiet, but her latest release in 2020 is "Not Another Love Song," and so far, Mai has shown how big of a career she could have.
