The multiple listings service, or MLS, is a set of private databases of homes and properties, which local real estate brokers use to share information on homes they have listed for sale. The brokers agree to make their listings available to other licensed Realtors, to enable them to locate suitable and qualified buyers more quickly than they could by simply using their own listing. Now, the service also sends listings to be advertised on various websites, including those of large real estate companies that are affiliated with MLS. Only member agents can access the listings —under most circumstances, they are not available to the public.
