There is no single reason a woman considers adoption. Usually there are several, and they are tangled up with love, timing, and what she knows about her own life right now.

Some women want to give the children they are already raising their full attention. Some are in school, starting over, or working toward stability. Some want their child to have opportunities they cannot provide at this moment. Some want to choose the family themselves instead of leaving the future to chance.

None of these reasons mean a woman loves her baby less. And if you think through your reasons and decide to parent, that decision deserves the same respect.

When Lauren and Travis Lafayette adopted their daughter through Texas Adoption Center, her birth mother chose her middle name. She picked it out of a hat at the hospital. The name was Jean.

That name stayed with them. So did the stories of the birth mothers they read about during their own adoption. That Christmas, they worked with their adoption specialist to send practical gifts to birth mothers who had placed around the holidays. Groceries. Clothing. Furniture. Things that lightened the load.

That Christmas became The Giving Jean, a ministry that supports birth mothers long after placement, from Thanksgiving meals to Mother's Day flowers to school supplies for the children they are raising.

Today is the first day of fall. Leaves change on their own schedule, and so do people.

If you are pregnant and thinking about adoption, you might feel pressure to have an answer by a certain date. Some women reach out early in pregnancy. Some reach out in the third trimester. Some reach out after their baby is already born. Each of those is a real starting point.
