Peculiar People Day

Today we celebrate those strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world’s idea of what is normal and sane. They challenge the status quo and utterly rebuke the concept that that which is out of the ordinary is bad. Whether they simply dress in their own style or have very clear ideas of what is right and normal, Peculiar People Day is their opportunity to shine.

There seems to be a strange fascination with these small dolls with oversized heads mounted on a spring, especially among baseball fans.

German bobble head dolls were made of ceramic and began production in the late 1700s, early 1800s. In the 1920’s the bobblehead came to sports, each being made exactly like the other. In the 1930’s the love of these died off, only to be reborn in the 1960’s when they started producing custom faces representing the most popular players of the time. When plastic bobblehead dolls were created in 1990’s, the industry once more saw a boom that has carried through straight into modern day, with ever more customizable options being presented with each passing year.

Supposedly Mary, Queen of Scotland, invented modern shortbread in the 16th century by adding sugar to the existing recipe. We do know the first printed recipe for shortbread was published by one Mrs. McLintock back in 1736 and the association with Scotland has stuck ever since.

So here it is:
2 1/4 cups (12oz) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (4oz) sugar
1 cup (8oz) butter

Preheat your oven to 375°F/190°C and mix all the ingredients together until they form a stiff dough. You should add any additional ingredients like chocolate chips or lavender at this stage; it doesn’t make much difference whether you mix by hand or use a mixer. Roll out the dough and form round shapes, which should then be scored into triangles. Prick with a fork so that you don’t get air bubbles. You could also use a shortbread mold. Bake it for 25-30 minutes and sprinkle it with sugar immediately upon removing it from the oven.

You know, all those TV shows and movies we love to discuss almost every time we gather casually as a group? There was a screenwriter somewhere in the mix of almost all of them. Yep.

In the 2000 United States presidential election, many Florida votes used Votomatic-style punched card ballots where incompletely punched holes resulted in partially punched chads: either a "hanging chad," where one or more corners were still attached, or a "fat chad" or "pregnant chad," where all corners were still attached, but an indentation appears to have been made. These votes were not counted by the tabulating machines. The aftermath of the controversy may have affected the outcome of the election and caused the rapid discontinuance of punch card ballots in the United States.

Thousands of years ago, the Sumerians were the first, as far as we know, to use drinking straws. By the 1800s, rye grass straws were popular because they were cheap and soft. However, they tended to add flavor to the drinks and also tended to turn to mush.

Inventor Marvin C. Stone became especially frustrated by straws’ shortcomings, as the taste of the rye mixed with that of his drink. He then patented the modern drinking straw in 1888. The first straw Stone made was just paper wound around a pencil to make a thin tube, and he then slid out pencil out from one end and applied glue between the strips.

There used to be a local Italian food chain that used large tubes of pasta as straws. And yes, they did add flavor to the drinks.

Now, wearing my Hilton hat, plastic straws are deemed to be toxic to the environment. So, drink from paper, pasta, or metal straws!
