Our hearts are heavy with the loss of Albert “Bert” Scherbarth, a longtime Cedars artist, friend and neighbor. Albert passed unexpectedly Feb.18th, at the age of 70.

The Cedars Open Studios organization had the honor of celebrating Albert as one of the original artists of the Cedars Open Studios Tour, alongside fellow artists Rick Maxwell, Jim Bowman, and Mary Lynn Bowman, during the 20th anniversary of the Cedars Open Studios Tour.

Many artists have Albert to thank for finding their way to the Cedars early on, when Albert encouraged them to check out the neighborhood. Just a handful of artists were occupying the industrial buildings. His sculptures and contributions can be seen throughout the Cedars, in the unpredictable twists and turns of the sculpted steel fences, towers, and garden doors that welcome visitors into the historic homes of Cedars residents, and in the favorite sculpture, “Cecil, Age 12,” who has kept watch near the old steel mill outside his front door for many years. Albert’s work popped up in the most unexpected places around the neighborhood, including his contribution to the famous Bowler Hat that overlooks I-30. The Bowler Hat was one of several collaborations he worked on with fellow artists at what is now known as Rule Six Studios.

In the days to come, many artists, friends and art patrons will be sharing stories and memories of Albert. The Cedar Open Studios organization would like to collect these to help preserve his memory and continue sharing it. The Cedars Open Studios has been a tradition in Cedars Dallas for over twenty years. The annual November tour is now organized by a non profit organization, and has expanded across the neighborhood to dozens of locations featuring the work of over 100 Cedars Artists exhibiting ceramics, painting, sculpture, metal works, music, glass, new media, and more.
