Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, particularly in areas linked to mood regulation. Here are five ways TMS can help with depression and anxiety:
- **Targets Specific Brain Areas**: TMS focuses on the prefrontal cortex, which is often underactive in depression and anxiety, helping to restore normal function and improve mood regulation.
- **Non-Invasive and Well-Tolerated**: Unlike medications or more invasive treatments, TMS involves no surgery or sedation, with minimal side effects like mild headache or scalp discomfort, making it a viable option for those intolerant to drugs.
- **Effective for Treatment-Resistant Depression**: TMS is FDA-approved for depression that doesn’t respond to antidepressants, with studies showing 50-60% response rates and 30-40% remission rates in such cases.
- **Reduces Anxiety Symptoms**: By modulating brain activity, TMS can also alleviate anxiety symptoms, particularly in those with co-occurring anxiety and depression, as it helps regulate overactive fear circuits.
- **Long-Lasting Benefits**: Clinical trials indicate that TMS can provide sustained relief, with many patients experiencing reduced symptoms for months after a standard 4-6 week treatment course.
TMS is covered by most insurance.

**Facts About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for Depression:**
1. **What is TMS?** Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), particularly for those who haven’t responded to traditional treatments like antidepressants or therapy. It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.
2. **How It Works:** TMS targets the prefrontal cortex, an area often underactive in people with depression. Magnetic coils placed on the scalp deliver repetitive pulses (rTMS) to stimulate nerve cells, helping to improve mood and emotional regulation.
3. **Effectiveness:** Studies show TMS can significantly reduce depression symptoms in 50-60% of patients, with about one-third achieving full remission. It’s particularly effective for treatment-resistant depression.
4. **Procedure:** Sessions last just 3 minutes, 5 days a week, for 36 sessions. Patients remain awake, and no anesthesia is required. It’s an outpatient procedure, so you can resume normal activities immediately.
5. **Side Effects:** TMS is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects include mild scalp discomfort or headaches, which usually subside. Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS doesn’t cause memory loss or seizures.
6. **Who It’s For:** TMS is recommended for adults with MDD who haven’t responded to at least one antidepressant. It’s not typically used for other mental health conditions, though research is exploring its potential for anxiety, PTSD, and more.
7. **Accessibility:** TMS is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare, for treatment-resistant depression, though coverage varies. Check with us for specifics on costs and eligibility.
8. **Long-Term Benefits:** Some patients experience sustained relief after a course of TMS, though maintenance sessions may be needed for lasting effects. Combining TMS with therapy or medication can enhance outcomes.

Everyone's response to psychiatric medication is different. But we know that many people are worried about the side effects. One thing that's important to understand, however, is that sometimes, the side effects are caused by the medication working effectively. For example, there is serotonin in both the gut and the brain. If you take a medication that increases serotonin, and you experience a bit of stomach discomfort, that may be a sign of the medication *working*. We still want to make sure you're not suffering, of course, but it's important to understand that this is not being caused because pharmaceutical medications are unnatural. The reason that many natural and herbal remedies do not cause stomach issues is because they do not work. if they did, we would expect that some people would reach with similar side effects. Always talk to a psychiatrist about any medication or supplement you take, so that we can help you understand what the medication is doing and why it is helpful.
Sleep is probably one of the most important things you can do for your mental health. Lack of sleep causes a host of issues that affect your psychological wellness. Too many to name here, in fact. But one thing that we will mention is that a lack of sleep stresses your body and also disrupts how your brain functions. Even if you "feel fine" and feel like you're getting through your lack of sleep, behind the scenes, many, many issues are potentially arising. You may feel fine, but your brain doesn't, and in the end that is a recipe for developing psychiatric disorders.
