Its week TWO of Pride Month!

This Pride Month, we proudly recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of the transgender community.

Transgender individuals continue to face disproportionate rates of discrimination, violence, homelessness, and barriers to accessing essential services. Every person deserves the opportunity to live authentically, safely, and with dignity.

At Families to Freedom, we believe that support services, safety, and compassion should be available to everyone—regardless of gender identity or expression. We remain committed to creating spaces where all survivors are respected, heard, and empowered.

This month, and every month, we stand with transgender individuals, honor their experiences, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our communities.

Happy Pride Month.

🐾❤️ THE BEST THINGS SOMETIMES COME IN VERY SMALL PACKAGES ❤️🐾

Meet Dewey, a 5 year old Chihuahua/Russian Toy Terrier mix with a heart much bigger than his tiny frame.

Dewey's story started with hardship. He arrived at the shelter severely underweight after not receiving the care he deserved. But if there's one thing this little guy has proven, it's that he's a fighter. Thanks to loving foster care, good nutrition, and a dedicated medical plan, Dewey is steadily gaining weight and thriving every day. 💪

What truly makes Dewey special isn't his resilience. It's his incredible capacity to love.

🥰 Professional lap warmer
🐶 Dog friendly
🐱 Cat friendly
👧 Kid friendly
🏡 House trained
🛏️ Crate trained
❤️ Loves everyone he meets

Dewey is the kind of dog who believes every lap was made just for him. He seeks out affection wherever he goes and wants nothing more than to be close to his people. Whether you're watching TV, working from home, or relaxing after a long day, Dewey will happily volunteer to be your shadow.

He's already been treated for heartworms, is current on vaccines, microchipped, and his neuter is covered by Legacy Humane Society once he gains a little more weight.

Dewey is looking for a compassionate family who will continue helping him regain his strength while giving him the love and security he's always deserved. In return, he'll give you his whole heart. ❤️

If you're looking for a loyal little companion who will love you endlessly, Dewey may be your perfect match.

UPDATE 4/18: 2 DIED BETWEEN LAST NIGHT AND THIS MORNING. ANOTHER ALMOST DID TODAY, BUT SHE WAS RESCUED. WE NEED TO GET BRANDI & HER REMAINING 11 PUPPIES OUT BEFORE MORE FACE THE SAME FATE….

🚨URGENT — Brandi & her 14 pups need DFW foster & rescue placement IMMEDIATELY🚨
‼️The shelter’s whelping room is full & this large family is at risk of getting sick & unalived for it‼️

Brandi
14 pups: A1282431–A1282437 & A1282439–A1282445
📍Dallas Animal Services
1818 N Westmoreland Rd, Dallas, TX 75212

‼️I AM A VOLUNTEER — NOT THE SHELTER‼️
• Not adoptable at this time
• Rescue + committed DFW foster needed (a reputable rescue will provide supplies & vetting support)
• Mom: ~4 years old, Heartworm Negative, 51 lbs
• 14 puppies (~10 days old, 6 males, 8 females)
• Intake: Stray

Brandi is a sweet, exhausted mama caring for her 14 newborn puppies in the shelter. She is doing her best, but this is not an environment where newborns can safely thrive.

The whelping room is full & this family urgently needs placement to make space for incoming litters. Puppies this young are extremely vulnerable, and remaining in the shelter puts them at very high risk of illness.

They need a rescue with a committed local DFW foster who can provide a clean, low-stress environment where the puppies can safely nurse, grow, & develop until they are old enough for foster-to-adopt or adoption.

Medical
Mom:
3/20: Intake exam completed
• Heartworm negative
• Vaccinated (Bordetella, DA2PP, rabies), dewormed, flea/tick/heartworm prevention given
• Microchip implanted

Puppies:
3/20: Intake exam completed
• Too young for vaccines
• Mycodex spray for fleas
• Dewormed (pyrantel & ponazuril)
• Microchips implanted

Shelter Observation
Brandi:
3/20: Allowed handler in kennel, calm, relaxed, sweet demeanor, allowed pets, tail not wagging, mostly kept to herself

📩HOW TO HELP (subject: URGENT – Brandi A1282430 & 14 pups)

Sharing a photo of Rachael from last night, April 17, 2023, showing both legs!

This photo was taken literally moments after her leg bandage was removed. As you can see, her skin is a bit dry and flakey from being bandaged (the skin is unable to naturally shed while it is covered.) I gave her a good rub with a moisturizing oil, then wrapped it back up. If given 5 minutes alone with her leg unwrapped, she will quickly tear open another wound. It is a mystery why this happens. For now, she now leaves it alone as long as it is wrapped. I thought you all would enjoy seeing how much her leg has improved since she first arrived in December... and who can resist that adorable face!!
